Formaldehyde in kitchen cabinets from China: ENF, E0, CARB and what to put in the order
Kitchen cabinets from China and formaldehyde: how ENF, E0 and E1 compare, what CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI ask of US imports, and what to check on site.
- China’s board standard GB/T 39600-2021 grades panels ENF, E0 and E1, from strictest to least strict.
- A Xiaohongshu explainer quotes the ENF limit as 0.025 mg/m³; treat that as a guide and confirm the method with your lab.
- In the US, composite wood in finished goods falls under TSCA Title VI / CARB Phase 2: certified panels, compliant labels and records.
- A Guangdong guide compares seven board types, most of them ENF-grade — particleboard, multi-ply, blockboard, OSB, rubberwood and imported panels — by moisture behaviour and use.
- A Sichuan homeowner who moved in after about half a month credits low-glue installation as much as board grade.
Chinese board is graded for formaldehyde under GB/T 39600-2021 as ENF, E0 or E1, with ENF the strictest. Those grades do not replace the rules of your market: composite wood in furniture and cabinets sold in the US must meet TSCA Title VI, which follows CARB Phase 2, with certified panels and labelled goods. Name the board, its grade and its certification in the order, check the marks on site, and confirm current requirements with your importer or testing lab.
What do ENF, E0 and E1 mean on Chinese board?
They are formaldehyde emission grades for wood-based panels under China’s GB/T 39600-2021; ENF is the strictest, then E0, then E1. A Xiaohongshu explainer on environmental grades gives the ENF limit as 0.025 mg/m³ and describes it as China’s highest domestic grade. Custom-cabinet brands increasingly lead with ENF in their marketing; one cabinet brand’s sponsored post pairs the grade with a full 18 mm carcass and scan-to-trace labels.
Two cautions for an importer. First, a Chinese grade is measured by a Chinese method; do not assume it maps one-to-one onto a foreign label with a similar name. Second, the grade belongs to the board, not the cabinet — edges, glue, lacquer and installation add their own emissions. Buyers in China know this: a widely read post in the same search is titled, in effect, “my cabinets are all ENF, so why is my formaldehyde over the limit?”.
Are kitchen cabinets from China CARB compliant?
Only if the composite panels in them are certified and the finished goods are labelled for the US; a Chinese ENF certificate on its own does not show that. In the US, hardwood plywood, particleboard and MDF — including in finished furniture and cabinets — fall under TSCA Title VI, which aligned federal rules with California’s CARB Phase 2. In general that means panels from a mill certified by an approved third-party certifier, labels on the goods or their boxes, and records that let the importer trace the panels. Rules, exemptions and labelling details change, so confirm them with your customs broker or testing lab.
For UK, EU, Australian and Gulf buyers the rules differ; ask your importer which emission class and test method apply. Cabinets from China may also face trade remedies in the US — see los derechos antidumping sobre muebles de cocina y de lavabo — and our muebles de cocina page covers how we source them.

Chinese homeowners have turned ENF into a marketing word, and overseas buyers are starting to hear it in quotes. It is a good sign but the wrong document. A Chinese grade tells you how the board was made for China; your market’s rule tells you whether the cabinet can be sold at home. Ask for both, and pay for the photos that prove the certified panel is the one in your carcass.
Which board should you specify for cabinets and wardrobes?
Choose the board by where it goes, then by grade. A Guangdong homeowner’s guide (515 likes) to ENF boards sums up the trade-offs:
| Board (ENF grade) | What the guide says | Suggested use |
|---|---|---|
| Particleboard | Cheap, mixed fast-growing timber; swells and blows its edges if wet | Puertas |
| Multi-ply | Mid-price; resists moisture, sturdy | Carcasses (doors may warp) |
| Blockboard (“eco board”) | Light and soft | Carcasses |
| OSB | Mid-price pine; swells if wet | Puertas |
| Rubberwood solid board | Best moisture resistance, strongest | Carcasses |
The author leaves E0 boards out altogether because there is a child in the house. Commenters add two practical points: the glue matters as much as the board, and the cut face tells you more than the label. Hinges and slides matter as much as the carcass — see furniture hardware.

¿Qué aportan los comentarios?
The board-guide comments are practical, and pricing is all over the place.
- Quotes vary widely. One reader asked whether RMB 1,050 per square metre for ENF OSB cabinetry was too much; a reply cites RMB 520 from a renovation firm and RMB 398 from a factory online.
- It’s the glue. A short but pointed comment: board quality is mainly about the adhesive.
- Look at the section. Another reader says the cut face shows what a board is really made of.
- How to test at home. Asked how to measure formaldehyde, the Sichuan homeowner suggests a closed room and a meter or repeated test strips, with an air purifier as a rough guide.
How do you check the board grade when the cabinets are made?
Check the marks on the panels, the thickness and the certificate, and match all three to the order. Nuestra guía de inspección de mobiliario describes a Tianjin buyer finding ENF watermarks under a UV torch; the same checks work in a Foshan workshop:
- Grade and brand marks on uncut panels, including UV-visible marks where the mill uses them.
- Thickness at cut edges against the order — carcass and back panel separately.
- Edge banding sealed on all sides, including hidden edges, since raw edges release more.
- For US orders, the panel supplier’s certification and the label wording.
Ask for photos of panel marks during production, not only of finished cabinets; the lista de verificación de inspección lists the rest.

Does low-emission board mean a low-emission room?
No — adhesives, sealants and soft furnishings can add as much. A Sichuan homeowner (554 likes) moved in about half a month after finishing. They chose ENF board, fixed cabinets with anchors instead of glue, used almost no sealant, and picked natural linen, wool and untreated fabrics, arguing that soft furnishings are a major source of formaldehyde, benzene and VOCs. They tested twice before moving in. For fabric choices, see upholstery fabrics.

Cómo lo gestiona Source Foshan
For cabinetry and wardrobes we write the board type, thickness, grade and — for US orders — the certification requirement into the specification, and compare quotes against it. Our QC team photographs panel marks and cut edges during production, and every item is inspected against the signed-off spec before loading; you approve the photo and video report before the balance is paid. We coordinate export documents, but we do not certify compliance ourselves: we work to the requirements your importer or lab confirms.
For whole-home projects with custom cabinetry, we recommend Arcaya Living, whose service covers design direction, cabinetry, production follow-up, delivery and installation; its published projects include kitchens in the Bay Area and San Jose.

Preguntas frecuentes
Is E0 board safe for kitchen cabinets?
E0 is a recognised Chinese grade, one step below ENF. Whether it is acceptable depends on your market’s rules, so check with your importer rather than relying on the Chinese grade.
What does CARB compliant furniture mean?
It means the composite wood inside meets California’s Phase 2 limits, now mirrored federally by TSCA Title VI, with certified panels and labels. Confirm current details with your broker or lab.
Is ENF the same as CARB Phase 2?
No. They are different standards with different test methods. An ENF certificate does not replace US certification and labelling.
How can I reduce formaldehyde from new cabinets?
Specify low-emission board, seal all edges, limit adhesives during installation and ventilate before moving in.
