Foshan furniture guides and kickbacks: how the tour-guide model works
How Foshan furniture guides and shopping agents are paid, what buyers report about shop commissions, and 7 checks to run before you follow anyone in.
- Foshan’s retail furniture trade runs through Lecong’s malls; a Longjiang maker with nearly ten years in the trade says most Lecong shops are intermediaries and the factories are in Longjiang.
- A Guangdong buyer reported the same sofa quoted at RMB 18,000 in one Lecong mall and bargained to RMB 8,000 in another.
- She also found carriers recommended by the shops were not the cheapest; booking a dedicated line herself saved RMB 50+ per cubic metre.
- A buyer who furnished a 220 m² flat for about RMB 110,000 planned the route alone and told a reader there was no need to pay a middleman once in Foshan.
- Source Foshan’s guided days cost USD 150, или USD 250 with a car; the route is approved before the trip and we take no shop commissions.
Foshan furniture guides drive buyers between malls and factory showrooms, usually for a low day rate or nothing. Buyers report that some guides are also paid by the showrooms they bring clients to, as a share of what the client buys — which gives the guide a reason to steer you. You can use a guide safely by paying a fixed day rate, approving the route in advance, getting quotes directly from each shop and asking in writing whether the guide receives anything from sellers.
How does the Foshan furniture tour-guide model work?
A guide collects you, drives you between malls and showrooms, translates and helps you order; the guide is paid either by you, by the shops, or by both. The service is genuinely useful. Foshan’s furniture district spreads across Lecong‘s malls, Longjiang‘s factory showrooms and smaller towns, most independent showrooms expect an appointment, and prices for similar pieces vary widely from one building to the next.
The question is who pays. Guides who charge a clear day rate are paid for their time. Guides who charge little or nothing are, buyers report, sometimes paid by the showrooms instead — a share of what you buy, commonly called a rebate or commission. Nothing about that is visible on the quote you receive. It does not make every free guide dishonest, but it changes whose interest the route serves.
Do Foshan furniture guides and shopping agents take kickbacks?
Buyers report that some do; you cannot tell from the outside, so treat an unpaid guide as a seller’s representative until shown otherwise. The Xiaohongshu posts we reviewed describe the incentives around the showrooms clearly, even when they do not use the word:
- Intermediaries everywhere. Under a widely saved Lecong guide, a maker who has worked in Longjiang for almost ten years says most Lecong shops are intermediaries and that clients arriving from Lecong often tell him prices there were high.
- Referral carriers. The same guide’s author found that freight carriers recommended by the shops were not the cheapest, and that contacting a dedicated freight line herself saved more than RMB 50 per cubic metre.
- Same sofa, two prices. A sofa quoted to her at RMB 18,000 in one mall came down to RMB 8,000 for the same design in another.
When a reader asked a buyer who had just furnished a whole flat whether hiring a local buyer would be safer, the reply was blunt: “Since you’re going anyway, there’s no need to let a middleman earn the difference.” That is fair advice for a domestic shopper who can return to the showroom. It is harder for an overseas buyer, who still needs export packing, consolidation and inspection after the showroom visit.

If you are not paying your guide, ask who is. A domestic shopper who overpays in Lecong can drive back and argue; an overseas buyer whose sofa was chosen on a guide’s route discovers the problem when the container is opened. For export buyers, a fixed day rate is the cheapest insurance on the trip.
How can you check whether a Foshan buying agent is paid by the shops?
Make the guide’s income visible: a fixed fee from you, a written no-commission statement, and quotes that come straight from the seller. Seven checks cover most of the risk:
- Pay a day rate and ask in writing whether the guide receives anything from shops, factories or carriers.
- Approve the route before the trip, including at least one showroom you found yourself.
- Get each quote directly from the seller, on its own quotation or WeChat account, not relayed by the guide.
- Compare one benchmark piece in two buildings — the RMB 18,000 / 8,000 sofa shows why.
- Contract with the maker and pay the deposit to the seller’s company account.
- Get your own freight quote rather than accepting the shop’s carrier by default.
- Watch for pressure to order on the day in a place you had not planned to visit.
None of these offends a guide who is paid only by you.

The comments under the three most-saved Foshan buying posts add the local knowledge the posts leave out.
- Factories are elsewhere. A Longjiang furniture maker says most Lecong shops are showroom intermediaries and that customers arriving from Lecong usually complain prices were high; another reader went on to Longjiang and found better value.
- Mall purchases still go wrong. One buyer describes a RMB 7,000 sofa with badly matched grain, a coffee table with a visible flaw and a leather bed in the wrong colour — refused on delivery, with no date for a replacement.
- Do not count on discounts. Asked how much can be negotiated, the author of the 220 m² post advised controlling the budget rather than relying on discounts, adding that sellers always know more than buyers.
How do buyers plan a Foshan furniture tour on their own?
The most organised buyers prepare the shortlist at home, book appointments by WeChat and rent a car. A Jiangsu buyer furnishing a 220 m² flat, with a budget of RMB 150,000 and a target of RMB 100,000, spent about RMB 110,000. Beforehand, the buyer followed brands’ Xiaohongshu accounts, dropped those that replied slowly or would not show a factory, and asked the rest by WeChat for addresses and catalogues — most would not quote in advance. Then: fly into Guangzhou, hire a car at Baiyun airport (about an hour to Foshan), stay near the Shunlian malls.
A Chongqing buyer who spent four days found that most showrooms needed appointments, that the import floor of the largest mall quoted a RMB 200,000 minimum and about eight months for non-stock orders, and that some showrooms had been bought out before Chinese New Year. If you want local help without the conflict, спланируйте визит в Foshan with a route you approve in advance.

Guide, buying agent or remote sourcing — which suits an overseas buyer?
A guide ends at the showroom door; an overseas order needs someone accountable until the container is unloaded. If you are in Foshan for two days and can return, a paid guide is enough. If the goods must be packed for export, combined with other suppliers and inspected before the balance, you need a sourcing agent working for you — see our полное руководство по агентам по закупке мебели в Китае. Or skip the trip altogether: «как закупать мебель, не летая в Китай» explains how video walk-throughs and samples replace the visit, and Alibaba or a sourcing agent covers the online route.

Как с этим работает Source Foshan
We run guided Foshan buying days for USD 150 a day for a guide, USD 250 with a car, or USD 299 with a 7-seat SUV. The route is sent for your approval before the trip, and we take no commissions or rebates from any showroom, factory or carrier — our income is the day rate, or our 3–5% service fee if you order through us. Quotes come from the supplier, deposits go to the supplier’s company account, and if you order, every piece is inspected against the confirmed specification before you release the balance.
If a trip is not practical, we recommend Arcaya Living as a way to see a curated Foshan-made range from home: more than 10,000 pieces organised by room and style, with delivery and installation handled end to end.
