Shipping furniture from China to New Zealand: biosecurity, timber, GST and costs
Shipping furniture from China to New Zealand: biosecurity checks on timber and crates, 15% GST, and buyers' reports of 3-day holds and one-third savings.
- New Zealand’s biosecurity system inspects timber furniture, cane and wicker, and wood packaging; crates and pallets must be ISPM 15-treated and marked, or made of plywood.
- An Auckland buyer’s shipment was held at customs for three days in 2025; she says her final bill matched her quote and she saved about a third against local prices.
- A buyer who shipped a folding Pilates reformer paid about RMB 700 in freight — then waited fünf Monate after the shipment was held in Chinese customs for four.
- GST is 15% at the time of writing; a formal import entry is generally needed above NZD 1,000. Bestätigen Sie dies bei Ihrem Zollmakler.
- Buyers stress that in New Zealand delivery and assembly are often priced separately, and local installers charge by the hour.
Furniture shipped from China to New Zealand has to clear biosecurity as well as customs: timber items, wicker and all wood packaging can be inspected, and crates and pallets must meet ISPM 15. GST of 15% applies at the time of writing, and larger consignments need a formal import entry — confirm with your customs broker. Buyers on Xiaohongshu report shipments held for a few days at Auckland, final bills close to their quotes, and savings of about a third against local prices once everything was paid.
What biosecurity rules apply to furniture shipped to New Zealand?
Anything made of or packed in wood can be inspected, and it must arrive clean — no bark, soil, insects or live timber pests. New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries treats timber furniture, cane, rattan, wicker and bamboo as risk goods, and it pays close attention to wood packaging. Solid-wood crates and pallets must be treated to ISPM 15 and carry the stamp; plywood, particleboard and other processed wood are outside ISPM 15, which is why many forwarders use plywood (“fumigation-free”) crates. ISPM 15 applies to the packaging, not to the furniture itself; finished furniture is assessed under New Zealand’s own import rules.
What that means in practice: ask each supplier for kiln-dried timber and clean, finished undersides; declare wood accurately on the packing declaration; and build extra time into the schedule in case goods are held for inspection or treatment. Our Leitfaden zur Exportverpackung explains crate types and markings. All of this is a starting point — confirm the current requirements with your customs broker.
How much does it cost to ship furniture from China to New Zealand?
Buyers report that the landed total is lower than local retail, but only once every line — crating, fumigation, port charges, GST and delivery — is on the quote. An Auckland buyer who shipped a sofa and other furniture in 2025 compared three or four forwarders, found the quotes far apart, and says her final bill matched the quote: freight, clearance, taxes and delivery were all listed. Her conclusion was a saving of about a third against similar furniture in New Zealand.
Another New Zealand buyer, who furnished her home entirely online in 2025, lists the questions she asked every forwarder: does the per-cubic-metre rate include crating and fumigation, what are the destination port charges, and how will GST be calculated? A single item can be cheap: a buyer who had a folding Pilates reformer made in China paid about RMB 700 in freight after discounts, and under RMB 5,000 in total, against about 2,700–3,000 New Zealand or Australian dollars for a comparable local brand. For the overall cost structure, see the vollständige Leitfaden zum Möbelversand aus China.

For New Zealand, the risk is not the freight but the hold. A consignment of clean, well-documented furniture in plywood crates is a routine inspection; one untreated pallet or a dusty rattan chair can hold up the whole consignment. Pay for packing and paperwork that make the inspection boring.
What GST and customs charges apply in New Zealand?
GST of 15% at the time of writing, any customs duty set by the tariff classification, and a formal import entry for consignments generally above NZD 1,000 — confirm with your customs broker. GST is usually assessed on the value of the goods plus freight and insurance. Under one buyer’s post, a reader asked whether tax was included in her price; the reply was that it depends on the declared value. Biosecurity inspection and any treatment are charged on top. Personal-effects relief for people moving to New Zealand is aimed at used belongings, not new furniture bought from factories. Most furniture sits in Chapter 94 — see our Möbel-HS-Code-Leitfaden.

Readers’ questions under the New Zealand posts fill in useful detail.
- Warranty is unclear. Asked how the Pilates maker’s warranty would work in New Zealand, the buyer admitted she did not know — possibly online support only.
- Local price benchmark. She put a comparable locally sold reformer at about 2,700–3,000 New Zealand or Australian dollars, against her total of under RMB 5,000.
- Tax is not fixed. Under the Auckland post, a reader asked whether tax was included in a single price; the reply was that it depends on the declared value of the goods.
How long does shipping furniture from China to New Zealand take?
Plan on several months from order to delivery, and keep a buffer: holds at either end are common. The Auckland buyer planned six months ahead because she had heard shipping could take two to three months. The Pilates buyer’s order should have taken about a month; her consignment was held in Chinese export customs for four months, and an item sent in March arrived in August. Neither delay was caused by the furniture itself — which is why a tight move-in date and a single-supplier shipment are a risky combination. Compare the other long-haul lanes in shipping to Dubai and the Gulf.

How does delivery and installation work in New Zealand?
Assume delivery, carrying in, unpacking and assembly are separate charges unless the quote says otherwise. Both New Zealand buyers make this point. One found that delivery and installation are usually quoted separately and that local tradespeople are expensive; the other’s local team carried the furniture in, removed the packaging, assembled simple pieces and took the rubbish away — charged by the hour, so she assembled the small items herself. Ask for assembly drawings from each supplier and have parts labelled by carton before loading.
