Furniture MOQs in China: what factories really require for one home or one shop
One export factory's MOQs start at 60 sofas per size and 600 dining chairs; Foshan showrooms sell single pieces. What furniture MOQs mean for a home or shop.
- A profile of a Zhejiang export factory lists OEM minimums of 60 sofas or beds per size, 100 dining or coffee tables, 200 armchairs and 600 dining chairs per order.
- The same factory quotes 60–75 days for a first order and 55–65 days for a repeat.
- A cross-border retailer selling through Wayfair asks new factories for trial runs of 30–50 pieces per colour per item, with 20% paid up front and the balance 30 days after loading.
- That retailer pays for the first sample but expects the factory to cover the pre-production sample.
- A single Source Foshan whole-home order brought 54 items from 9 suppliers together in one container — the usual way round MOQs for a home.
There is no single furniture MOQ in China. Export factories set minimums per model, size or colour — one Zhejiang factory’s published OEM list starts at 60 sofas per size and 600 dining chairs per order — while Foshan’s showrooms and factory stores sell single pieces every day. For one home, the real constraint is getting many different items inspected and shipped together; for one shop, it is negotiating trial quantities, such as the 30–50 pieces per colour one online retailer asks for.
Why do furniture factories in China set minimum orders?
Because every new model, size or colour costs the factory set-up time — cutting patterns, changing a line, mixing a finish, making a sample — and the minimum is how that cost is spread. A factory producing a few hundred identical chairs spends the same time setting up as one producing ten. Minimums are highest where set-up is most expensive: moulded or bent parts, custom finishes and anything that needs a new sample.
That is also why MOQs vary so much between sellers. A factory that builds to order for dealers and homeowners, as many in Foshan do, is set up for short runs; an OEM plant built around container orders is not. Our руководство по производителям мебели Фошаня explains which kinds of factory sit where.
What minimum order quantities do export furniture factories quote?
For OEM work, expect minimums in the dozens to hundreds per item — and read them per model, per size and per order. A platform profile of a large Zhejiang export factory, which says it can ship 800–1,000 containers a year, publishes this list:
| Позиция | Minimum per order |
|---|---|
| Диваны | 60 pieces per size |
| Кровати | 60 per size |
| Шкафы | 60 |
| Dining tables, coffee tables, leisure chairs | 100 each |
| Armchairs | 200 |
| Обеденные стулья | 600 |
The same profile gives 60–75 days for a first order and 55–65 days for a repeat. Two details matter more than the numbers. “Per size” means a sofa in two lengths is two minimums. And “per order” means the minimum resets every time — it is not a lifetime commitment. Treat this as one factory’s policy, not an industry rule: Foshan factories that already sell to homeowners and dealers are usually far more flexible.

An MOQ is a negotiation over who pays for set-up, not a wall. For one home, the real minimum is set by the container, not by any factory. For a shop, a smaller first run at a higher unit price is often the cheapest insurance you can buy against warehousing six hundred chairs nobody wants.
Can you order small quantities of furniture from China?
Yes — either by buying existing models from factories that sell single pieces, or by negotiating a trial run and paying for the sample. In Foshan, showrooms and factory stores in Lecong and Longjiang routinely sell one sofa or one table; our map of Shunde’s furniture towns shows where they cluster.
For a small business, the terms posted by a cross-border retailer selling through Wayfair are a useful benchmark. Looking for new factories, it asked for:
- trial quantities of 30–50 pieces per colour per item for new products;
- 20% paid in advance, the balance 30 days after the container is loaded;
- a sample fee paid by the retailer for first samples, with the pre-production sample at the factory’s cost;
- export experience for North America, knock-down construction and cartons within a set size limit.
Those are a buyer’s asking terms, not what every factory will accept. On the other side, a maker of guesthouse furniture advertises that ordering in volume can halve the cost compared with buying finished pieces one at a time — a sales claim, but it shows how steeply price can step with quantity. If your pieces are your own designs, read о мебели OEM и ODM в Китае first: new designs carry sampling and tooling costs that no minimum removes.

Что добавляют комментарии?
The comments show who is reading factory MOQ posts — and it is not only importers.
- Homeowners ask too. Under the export factory’s profile, a reader asks whether she can buy from the factory for her own renovation; the answer is to message privately — some OEM plants will sell to individuals, on their own terms.
- Materials decide the factory. Under the retailer’s post, a commenter says Fujian factories could handle its mix of MDF, veneer and solid-wood chairs; another clarifies that the cabinets are veneered multilayer board and the chairs solid wood — the materials, not the quantity, narrow the list.
- Service providers circle. A US customs-clearance firm advertises in the same thread, a reminder that small importers attract many offers; choose your broker for your own reasons.
How does MOQ work when you are furnishing one home?
It mostly does not: a home needs one of many things, so the constraint shifts from factory minimums to consolidation and freight. A villa may need forty items from a dozen makers, each selling single pieces. The challenge is collecting them, checking each one and loading them together, because sea freight charges for space and every small separate shipment carries its own fixed costs.
That is why whole-home orders from China are usually consolidated: goods from each factory are delivered to one warehouse, inspected, re-packed and loaded into a single container or a shared one. The same logic helps a small shop mixing several models in one order. See our page on услугу комплексной меблировки дома for how a residential order is organised.
How do you negotiate a lower furniture MOQ with a Chinese factory?
Reduce the factory’s set-up cost and it will usually reduce the minimum: use its existing models and materials, keep sizes and colours few, pay for samples, and accept a higher unit price for the first run.
- Choose existing designs. Changing a fabric on a stock frame costs far less than a new frame.
- Share materials across items. One fabric across sofas, chairs and cushions lets the factory buy and cut once.
- Mix models in one order. A factory may accept a mixed container where it would refuse a small order of one item.
- Pay for the sample. As the cross-border retailer does, it shows you are serious and removes the factory’s main risk.
- Accept a higher first-run price in return for a smaller quantity, and agree the repeat price in writing.
Whatever quantity you agree, inspection is what protects you; our руководство по инспекции мебели covers checks for both one-off pieces and production runs.

Как с этим работает Source Foshan
For homes and small businesses we work mainly with makers that sell single pieces or short runs, and we compare two or three quotes per item against one written specification. Each supplier delivers to our Foshan consolidation warehouse, where every item is inspected against the confirmed spec, re-packed to export standard and labelled by room before we book LCL or FCL — one whole-home residence in the Greater Bay Area arrived as 54 items from 9 suppliers in one container. A deposit as low as 10% can start production on many orders, and our 3–5% fee is agreed before any factory is contacted.
If you need a handful of pieces rather than a production run, we recommend choosing from Arcaya Living’s catalogue: more than 10,000 pieces sourced to confirmed specifications, organised by room and by style. Designers furnishing several projects have their own page.

Часто задаваемые вопросы
What is the typical furniture MOQ in China?
It depends on the factory. Export OEM factories often quote dozens to hundreds per item — one lists 60 sofas per size and 600 dining chairs — while Foshan showrooms and factory stores sell single pieces.
Can I buy just one piece of furniture from a Chinese factory?
Yes, from factories and showrooms that sell existing models to homeowners, which is common in Foshan. Shipping one piece abroad is usually expensive unless it is consolidated with other goods.
Is MOQ per order or per year?
Usually per order, and often per model, size or colour. Ask the factory to state exactly what the minimum applies to.
How can I lower the MOQ for custom furniture?
Use the factory’s existing frames and materials, limit sizes and colours, mix models in one order and pay for samples. Expect a higher unit price on a smaller first run.
