Kort samengevat

  • A Shaanxi homeowner’s wall cabinets were hung 70 cm above an 85 cm worktop; with the hood’s fume panel open, only 42–47 cm of working height remained. The cabinets were later raised 12 cm.
  • Commenters under the same post describe the same mistake, one having 10 cm sawn off a cabinet.
  • A Hunan kitchen designer (1,100+ likes) lists ten details that prevent later complaints, including a fire-proof shelf under the hob, mould-resistant sealant and a sink at least 18 cm deep.
  • The same designer suggests 85–90 cm at the sink and 75–80 cm at the hob.
  • A Shandong self-builder warns that the gas supply is the service most often forgotten when cut-outs are planned.

The problems buyers report with kitchen cabinets from China are mostly about the specification: appliances that do not fit, cheaper boards or edge banding, wet-zone details left out, wrong sizes, and parts missing or damaged on arrival. Each has a specific prevention — appliance model numbers before drawings, a component-by-component board spec, photos of stamped panels, a signed drawing set and an inspection before the balance is paid.

What goes wrong most often with kitchen cabinets from China?

Five things, in roughly this order: appliance fit, sizes, substituted materials, wet-zone details and damage or missing parts on arrival. Chinese homeowners report the same issues with local brands; abroad, each costs far more to fix.

Problem Usual cause Prevention
Appliance does not fit or clashes Drawings made before model numbers were fixed Appliance spec sheets attached to the drawing set
Cabinet too big, too small or off-centre Plan dimensions used instead of site measurements Measured survey, signed drawings, filler strips
Cheaper board or edge banding Spec written by category, not by component Board maker, grade and banding per component; photos
Swelling, mould, stained sealant Wet-zone details left out Plywood sink cabinet, mould-resistant sealant, sealed cut-outs
Damage or missing hardware Domestic packing, no packing list by cabinet Export packing, labelled hardware kits, pre-loading inspection

Why do appliances not fit Chinese-made cabinets?

Because the cabinet was drawn around a rule of thumb instead of the appliance’s own installation drawing. In the most-discussed post here, a Shaanxi homeowner was told by the hood seller that wall cabinets could sit about 70 cm above the worktop — without saying 70 cm from what. Built that way over an 85 cm worktop, with the hood’s fume panel open, only 47 cm of clear height remained, 42 cm at the pan support. The cabinets were raised 12 cm, the most a socket above allowed, and the doors and an inner cabinet shortened. One commenter recalled the hood maker’s own page giving a different figure from the “standard” the designer insisted on.

Abroad the risk doubles, because Chinese factories default to Chinese appliance clearances. Send the model number and installation manual of every built-in appliance before drawings start, and have your installer confirm clearances and connections against local codes. Our guide to installing Chinese cabinets abroad covers the appliance-fit check, and measuring for cabinets from China the site survey.

Almost every cabinet problem in these posts was cheap to prevent and expensive to fix. The Shaanxi kitchen needed only a clearance figure on the drawing. For an imported kitchen, the cheapest insurance is a drawing that names every appliance, every service point and every board — signed before the first panel is cut.

Why do some cabinets fail around the sink and hob?

Because the details that keep water, oil and heat out of the board are small, cheap and easy to omit from a quote. A Hunan kitchen designer’s ten-point list is mostly about water and heat: a stainless or stone shelf under a built-in hob to catch oil and debris; mould-resistant modified-silane sealant instead of ordinary silicone, which blackens; an undermount sink; a single sink at least 18 cm deep; and, on a flat wall, sealing the worktop straight to the wall rather than fitting an upstand that traps dirt.

Particleboard swells if water reaches an unsealed edge, so most Chinese notes recommend plywood for the sink cabinet at least — see materialen voor kastplaten. The same moisture logic applies in bathrooms, covered in bathroom vanities from China. A Shandong self-builder adds: plan every cut-out — water, waste, power and especially gas — before the carcasses are made.

A panel under the hob cut-out keeps grease and heat off the cabinet contents; the other cabinet has an open hob cut-out straight into the unit.

Wat voegen de reacties toe?

The 603 comments under the hood-height post became a small survey of the same mistake.

  • Not an isolated case. Several commenters report wall cabinets fitted lower than they wanted; one says the designer refused to shorten the cabinets because 70 cm was “standard”.
  • Cut on site or returned? One owner had 10 cm sawn off a cabinet; others asked whether that was done on site or back at the factory — the difference matters abroad, where returning parts is impractical.
  • Hinges need timber. Under the tiled-cabinet post, the author explains that aluminium-wrapped timber posts were added because hinge screws will not hold in tile.

What gets swapped for something cheaper?

The parts you cannot see in a showroom photo: carcass board, back panels, edge banding on the carcass, and drawer runners. Chinese buyers’ posts collected for our themagids report laser edge banding applied to doors but not boxes, thin back panels, and board sold as one type turning out to be another. None of these is visible once the kitchen is installed and the doors are closed.

The prevention is a specification written per component, with the board maker’s name, and photographs of stamped panels and drilled edges taken during production. The same rule applies to wardrobes, where the substitutions are identical — see inloopkasten en kledingkasten uit China. Inspect against the spec, not against the showroom sample, using a routine like our inspectiechecklist voor meubels.

What goes wrong in shipping and on arrival?

Corner damage, lost hardware bags and cabinets nobody can match to a wall. Domestic Chinese deliveries are often lightly packed because the installer arrives with the truck. For export, panels need rigid corner protection, hardware kits packed per cabinet, and cartons coded by room and position. Ship spare hinges, runners, edge-banding strip and touch-up material; a missing part abroad can take weeks. See exportverpakking voor meubels en meubels controleren bij levering.

US buyers have one more arrival problem that has nothing to do with quality: wooden cabinets and vanities from China have been subject to anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders since 2020. Confirm scope and exposure with your broker before ordering — our explainer sets out what to ask.

Are kitchen cabinets from China reviews on Reddit reliable?

Useful for spotting patterns, unreliable as a verdict on any one supplier. Review threads mix flat-pack ranges, custom orders and marketplace listings, and an experience says more about how the order was specified than about the factory. Read them for the failure modes, then check your order closes each one. For what happens when something does go wrong after delivery, see aftersales voor meubels gekocht in China.

Hoe Source Foshan dit aanpakt

We prevent these problems on paper first: appliance installation drawings attached to the cabinet drawings, a component-by-component specification, and a signed drawing set before cutting. We send weekly production photos and video; before loading we inspect every cabinet against the spec, check hardware kits against the packing list and label cartons by room. Your balance is released only after you approve the photo and video report. Our fee is 3–5% of order value, agreed in writing; we take no supplier commissions.

FAQ

What are the most common problems with kitchen cabinets from China?

Appliances that do not fit, cabinets built to the wrong size, cheaper board or edge banding than agreed, wet-zone failures and parts damaged or missing on arrival. All five are prevented mainly by a detailed specification, signed drawings and inspection before shipping.

How do I avoid cabinets that do not fit my appliances?

Choose appliances first and send their installation manuals to the factory before drawings are made; your installer confirms clearances against local codes.

What if my Chinese cabinets arrive damaged?

Photograph the damage before signing, check the packing list and report to the supplier and insurer promptly. Spare parts shipped with the order make many small repairs possible on site.

Do Chinese cabinets have anti-dumping duties?

In the US, wooden cabinets and vanities from China have been subject to anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders since 2020. Rates vary by exporter, so confirm with a licensed customs broker before ordering.
