Kort samengevat

  • A Sichuan wardrobe designer’s rules (9,000+ likes): short hanging ≥ 90 cm, long hanging 140–150 cm, doors 40–45 cm wide, depth 60 cm.
  • She favours more hanging than folding space, drawers outside the doors and split doors, which she says warp less.
  • A Zhejiang homeowner who negotiated for 8 hours (14,000+ likes) lists the tactics to watch for: an “ENF” claim backed by an E1 test report, and 5 mm MDF backs behind 18 mm carcasses.
  • Her contract lines: back panels over 9 mm and the same board as the carcass; PUR edge banding on carcasses as well as doors; a price per extra drawer.
  • Lighting is a classic extra: one buyer was quoted RMB 280/m for LED strip plus RMB 420 per transformer.

Custom wardrobes from China are made by the same panel factories that build kitchens, priced mostly by projected area and designed around a size grid: roughly 60 cm deep, doors 40–45 cm wide, at least 90 cm for short hanging and 140–150 cm for long hanging, by one Chinese designer’s rules. The risk is not the design but the invisible parts — back panels, carcass edge banding, board grade, drawer and lighting extras — so write each into the order and have it checked before shipping.

What kinds of wardrobes and closets can you buy from China?

Built-in hinged or sliding wardrobes, open walk-in closet systems, bed-end units and matching dressing tables — cut to your room from the same board as the kitchen. Chinese firms usually price wardrobes per square metre of projected (elevation) area, with drawers, lighting and fittings on top, so two quotes at the same rate can contain very different wardrobes.

If the wardrobes are part of a larger order, keep one finish system across the home; our gids over keukenkasten uit China covers the shared process, and our wardrobes and closets service what we source.

What sizes should a custom wardrobe from China use?

Start from your own clothes, not the factory’s template; then check the result against a Chinese designer’s rules of thumb. A wardrobe designer in Sichuan, whose post on layouts people only regret after moving in has more than 9,000 likes, gives these figures:

Element Her guideline What to check yourself
Short hanging (shirts, jackets) At least 90 cm Your longest jacket plus hanger and rail
Long hanging (coats, dresses) 140–150 cm Your longest coat or dress
Door width 40–45 cm Swing clearance to the bed or wall
Carcass depth 60 cm Room width after the bed and walkway

Chinese sizes assume Chinese clothing and rooms; a winter-coat wardrobe in Toronto may need longer or deeper sections. Our gids voor het opmeten van kasten explains how to measure the room, including ceiling height at several points and skirting and cornice details.

Onze kijk hierop

Chinese homeowners write clauses like “withhold the balance if the depth is out by more than 1 cm” because they can check it on installation day. An overseas buyer cannot, so the clause is worth nothing unless someone measures the cabinet in Foshan before it is packed. For wardrobes, we would trade a fancier door finish for a verified back panel and carcass edge banding every time.

Full-height or split doors, handles or handle-less?

Split doors are the safer default for tall wardrobes; full-height doors look cleaner but need stiffer board and straightening hardware. The Sichuan designer prefers doors split into two sections, because tall single doors warp more, and handle-less fronts. Under another sizing post (5,700+ likes), one owner settled on 38–39 cm doors for a 2.5 m wardrobe, while another found her 45 cm doors looked like room doors. Draw door widths to scale before approving them.

If the wardrobe runs into panelling or a concealed door, the reveal gaps and door heights must line up across the wall; that is covered in interior doors and wall panels from China.

Wat voegen de reacties toe?

The comments under the 8-hour negotiation post argue about how far a contract can protect a buyer.

  • Trust versus paper. The most-liked comment says an honest seller matters more than clauses, because you will never think of everything; a reply adds that with a dishonest seller the contract is waste paper and legal action is exhausting.
  • Is 1 cm fair? One reader mocks a clause withholding payment for a depth error over 1 cm; another replies that with proper setting-out, a 1 cm error means the job was not done properly.
  • Full payment is common. Several buyers say every firm they asked required payment in full, leaving no balance to withhold.

What do Chinese buyers write into a wardrobe contract?

The invisible specification: emissions grade with a test report, back-panel thickness, edge banding on every part, the board brand, and a price for every extra. A Zhejiang homeowner spent eight hours negotiating her whole-house order and published the tactics she argued over and the clause she used against each; the post has more than 14,000 likes. Paraphrased:

  1. Emissions: a seller claims ENF board, but the test report shows E1. Her answer: ask for a report from a CMA-accredited lab and a compensation clause if formaldehyde exceeds the limit.
  2. Achterpanelen: the seller talks about 18 mm doors and carcasses and never mentions backs, which turn out to be 5 mm MDF. Her clause: backs over 9 mm and the same board as the carcass, measured on the sample.
  3. Kantenband: PUR on the doors, EVA on the carcass. Her clause: PUR on both.
  4. Board swap: OSB ordered, cheaper particleboard delivered. Her clause: board brand, material and grade in the contract, with photos.
  5. Drawers: three “free” drawers, each extra one RMB 200. Her clause: the number included and the price of each extra.
  6. Lighting: cheap LED strip, then the transformer and switches charged separately.

For an overseas order add two more lines: CARB/TSCA documents for US composite-wood panels (see our gids over formaldehyde-emissies) and export packing by room. The board choices themselves are explained in materialen voor kastplaten.

How is a walk-in closet from China different from a wardrobe?

Everything is visible, so every carcass edge, back and shelf front becomes a finished surface — and lighting becomes an electrical question. Specify edge banding and back-panel finish as if they were doors. Drawer islands, glass fronts and integrated lighting are common in Chinese closet designs; abroad, LED drivers, switches and wiring must meet local electrical rules, so have your electrician confirm them or buy them locally and have the factory drill for them.

If an en-suite is part of the job, the vanity can share the finish — see bathroom vanities from China.

How are wardrobes from China shipped and installed?

Flat-packed, labelled by room and position, with filler and top panels cut to fit on site. Rooms are never perfectly true, so full-height wardrobes get a top filler the installer scribes on site; ship spare hinges, runners and edge-banding strip. Our guide to installing Chinese cabinets abroad covers the installer brief, and whole-home sourcing from Foshan covers combining wardrobes with loose furniture in one container.

Hoe Source Foshan dit aanpakt

For wardrobes and closets we turn your room measurements and clothing needs into a drawing and a component specification — board, grade, back panels, edge banding, hardware, drawers, lighting — and collect two or three Foshan quotes against it. We follow production with weekly photos and video and measure depths, back panels and edge banding at inspection; the balance is released only after you approve the photo and video report. Our fee is 3–5% of order value, agreed in writing.

FAQ

Can I buy custom wardrobes from China?

Yes. Chinese panel factories build wardrobes to your room dimensions, usually priced per square metre of projected area; send a measured drawing and a component spec, and inspect before shipping.

How deep should a wardrobe be?

About 60 cm overall is the common guideline for hanging clothes; check your widest hangers and coats before reducing it.

How high should the hanging sections be?

One designer suggests at least 90 cm for short hanging and 140–150 cm for long hanging. Measure your own longest garments on hangers, because clothing lengths vary.

Can I get a walk-in closet system from China?

Yes. Because everything is visible, specify edge banding and finishes on all parts, and have lighting confirmed by a local electrician.
