Shipping furniture from China to Canada: ports, costs, customs and condo delivery
Shipping furniture from China to Canada: a Vancouver buyer's order took 50+ days warehouse to door. Ports, advertised rates, GST, duty and condo delivery.
- A Vancouver buyer’s furniture entered the forwarder’s warehouse at the end of July 2026, sailed in early August, reached Canada in early September and was delivered about a week after arrival — just over 50 days in all.
- Forwarder adverts collected in our earlier roundup put Canada at about RMB 1,350 per m³ (2025–2026) — above Australia and the US.
- Canada charges GST on imports, with provincial sales tax or HST depending on the province; duty depends on classification. Confirm with your broker.
- Settler’s-effects relief is for goods you owned and used before moving to Canada; another buyer’s claim that new furniture cleared duty-free as personal goods should not be relied on.
- One Canadian buyer singles out one check: door frames, stairwells and condo lifts must be measured before ordering.
Furniture from South China usually reaches Canada through Vancouver or Prince Rupert on the west coast, or Montreal and Halifax in the east, with Toronto served by rail from either side. A Vancouver buyer’s 2026 order took just over 50 days from warehouse to door. Expect GST (and provincial tax where it applies) plus any duty set by the tariff classification, and confirm both with a customs broker. New furniture generally does not qualify as duty-free settler’s effects.
How much does it cost to ship furniture from China to Canada?
Forwarder adverts put Canada among the dearer lanes from China — around RMB 1,350 per m³ in 2025–2026 — and door-to-door service with clearance and delivery adds to that. Notre dossiers d'acheteurs pour les États-Unis et l'Australie collected those advertised rates: roughly RMB 600–700 per m³ to Australia, about 1,000 to the US and 1,350 to Canada. They are adverts, not quotes, and what each includes varies.
The two Canadian buyers in our research did not publish their bills. Under one post, readers asked exactly the question that matters — whether the total ends up turning a bargain into full price — and got no answer. Ask for a door-to-door quote that lists ocean freight, destination terminal and warehouse fees, customs brokerage, GST and duty, and delivery separately. The guide complet de l'expédition de meubles depuis la Chine explains each line.
Which port: Vancouver, Prince Rupert, Montreal or Halifax?
West-coast ports are the shortest sea route from South China; Toronto buyers usually receive containers by rail from Vancouver or through Montreal. Vancouver handles most Asia traffic, and Prince Rupert has rail links inland. For Ontario and Quebec, a container can land in Vancouver and continue by rail, or come via the Suez or Panama route to Montreal or Halifax. The choice affects transit time and inland cost more than ocean freight. For a shared-container shipment, ask which city the forwarder unpacks in: an LCL consignment unpacked in Vancouver still has to cross the country by truck to reach Toronto.

Canada is a long lane with a tax system that varies by province, which makes “duties included” promises harder to check. For Canadian buyers, the most valuable thing a forwarder can give you is not a low rate but a written statement of how your goods will be declared and who the importer of record is. If a post says new furniture cleared as personal effects, treat it as a warning, not a tip.
What duties and taxes apply when you import furniture from China to Canada?
GST applies to imports, provincial tax or HST depends on where you live, and duty depends on how each item is classified and its origin — confirm with a customs broker. Canada Border Services Agency assesses these at clearance, and commercial importers generally need a business number. Most furniture falls in Chapter 94 of the tariff; our guide des codes SH pour le mobilier explains how classification works.
Personal belongings are a separate case. Canada’s settler’s-effects relief is intended for goods you owned, possessed and used before arriving to live in Canada. One buyer in our research wrote that her new furniture was cleared quickly as duty-free personal goods; another said her forwarder’s adviser handled clearance from start to finish. Neither post explains the declaration. New furniture bought to furnish a Canadian home is normally an import, and a wrong declaration puts the risk on you.

Qu'apportent les commentaires ?
Most comments are compliments, but a few ask the right questions — and one post raises a flag of its own.
- Does it still save money? Under the second Canadian post, readers asked how much the whole thing cost and whether freight turned a bargain into full price; neither question was answered.
- The market is uneven. One reply notes that Chinese furniture is good value, but that shipping it needs a reliable consolidator “in this chaotic market”.
- Posts can be templated. A London buyer’s post in the same search describes delivery once the goods reached Canada — a sign the text was adapted from a template. Both Canadian posts name the same kind of moving company and read partly as promotions.
How long does shipping furniture from China to Canada take?
About seven to eight weeks from the warehouse in China to delivery in Vancouver, in the clearest account we found.
| Étape | Vancouver buyer, 2026 |
|---|---|
| All furniture received in forwarder’s warehouse; re-checked and reinforced | end of July |
| Vessel sails | early August |
| Arrives in Canada; forwarder handles clearance | early September |
| Delivered, unpacked, placed; packaging removed | about a week later |
Add production time before that, and more for custom work or anything spanning Chinese New Year. Toronto and Montreal deliveries routed through Vancouver take longer. For comparison, see how the other long lanes work in shipping to New Zealand et shipping to Dubai and the Gulf.

What should you check before delivery to a Canadian condo or house?
Measure every door, stair turn and lift before ordering, and book the building’s lift for delivery day. A buyer in Canada who shipped in 2026 singles this out as the one thing to get right: door frames, the width of the stairwell to the second floor and, for condos, the size of the lift. Many condo buildings also require a move-in booking for the service lift and protection pads; ask your building manager. In winter, confirm the delivery team’s plan for snow and ice at the kerb. The Vancouver buyer’s team unloaded, unpacked and placed each piece and took the packaging away — worth confirming in the quote, because packaging from a full home fills a driveway.
