Buying furniture from China online works for stock pieces from verifiable sellers. Ask for couriered samples, a video of your own piece and a company account.

En bref

  • A Chengdu homeowner furnished her flat from a Foshan seller without visiting Foshan: a remote stylist matched pieces to her floor plan, finish colours and wood-effect floor tiles. She puts the spend at roughly RMB 78,000.
  • A Jiangsu buyer chose pieces on a live video link to the showroom; the seller handled the factory’s own check, protective packing, freight and installation.
  • A Shandong buyer stopped buying furniture online after colour differences that made pieces look like different products, poor materials and return freight of several hundred yuan.
  • Both positive accounts carry the seller’s own hashtag, so read them as testimonials, not independent reviews.

You can buy furniture from China online through marketplace stores, a factory’s own shop on a social platform, or a seller you deal with over WeChat, and many Chinese households now furnish whole flats this way. It is reasonably safe for stock pieces from a seller whose company you can verify; for custom or expensive pieces, ask for couriered material samples and a video of your own piece in production, and pay only the company named on your order.

Where can you buy furniture from China online?

In three kinds of place: marketplace stores, factory or brand shops on social platforms, and sellers who trade directly over WeChat after you find them on Xiaohongshu. Each leaves a different record if things go wrong.

Canal What you get What stands behind the order À surveiller
Marketplace stores Listings, buyer reviews with photos, fixed prices The platform’s own dispute process, whose coverage for goods leaving China varies Many shops deliver only inside China; you need a forwarder
Factory and brand shops on social platforms Catalogues, custom sizes and fabrics, sometimes a stylist Whatever order form the seller issues Posts tagged with the seller’s name are marketing
Direct WeChat sellers The widest choice and the most flexibility Often only the chat history Personal payment accounts; no written specification

Is it safe to order furniture from China online?

It is as safe as the seller is verifiable and the order is specific. The research shows both outcomes: a Chengdu buyer says the stylist worked from her floor plan and finishes rather than pushing best-sellers, while a Shandong buyer’s earlier online orders brought large colour differences and costly returns, until she flew to a Foshan factory to test the leather and frames herself.

For an overseas buyer, the Shandong buyer’s fallback — going in person — is expensive, so the checks have to happen before paying: confirm the company name and address behind the shop, get physical samples of fabric, leather and finish sent by courier, and pay only the company that issues your order. How the deposit and balance should be split is covered in deposit and balance terms for Chinese furniture orders.

Notre avis

Buying online is not the risky part; anonymity is. A video call shows you a showroom, and a stylist can match a sofa to your floor tiles, but neither shows you the piece that will be built for you. Our rule for online orders is simple: ask to see your own piece, not the showroom’s — the frame before it is upholstered and the finished item beside its order label — and pay only the company whose name is on the order.

What should you ask an online furniture seller before paying?

Ask for the facts you would otherwise see in a showroom, in writing. A short list covers most of the risk:

  1. Which company issues the order, and is the bank account in that company’s name?
  2. What is each component made of — frame, foam, fabric or leather code, board type, stone thickness?
  3. Will you courier samples of the fabric, leather and finish before I pay a deposit?
  4. Will you film my piece, not the showroom sample, when the frame is built and again when it is finished?
  5. How will it be packed for export, and to which point is the price quoted — your warehouse, a forwarder in China, or my door?
  6. How do I report a defect after delivery, and what will you send?

Put the answers into the order itself, not just the chat. Our liste de contrôle du contrat d’achat de mobilier turns these questions into clauses, and the liste de contrôle des formalités lists what should come back with the goods.

Qu'apportent les commentaires ?

The comments are short, but three of them are useful to an overseas buyer.

  • The budget. Asked what the furnishing cost, the Chengdu buyer puts it at roughly RMB 78,000, and wonders aloud whether the appliances should count.
  • Built-ins stayed local. The Jiangsu buyer’s fitted cabinetry was made by a firm in Suzhou; only the freestanding furniture came from Foshan online.
  • Features need spelling out. A reader asks whether a single armchair is a massage chair; the owner explains it is powered and reclines but does not massage — a detail to confirm in writing.

How do WeChat and Xiaohongshu furniture sellers work?

Most start with a post on Xiaohongshu, move you to WeChat for a catalogue and quote, and sell through video calls and chat. The Jiangsu buyer describes the typical flow: she chose pieces on a live link to the showroom, then the seller arranged the factory’s self-inspection, protective packing, logistics and installation, with someone assigned to deal with any knocks in transit.

Two cautions. The glowing accounts in our research both carry the seller’s hashtag — treat such posts as advertising until you can verify the business. And a chat is a weak contract: save the quote and every agreed change, and ask for a written order form listing materials and dimensions. The New Zealand buyer’s advice for marketplace orders applies here too: favour sellers with many real reviews and study buyers’ own photos, because the seller’s photos and the buyers’ rarely match.

How do you get furniture bought online in China to your door?

Either the seller arranges export, or goods are delivered to a forwarder or consolidation warehouse in China and shipped together. Buying from several shops usually means consolidating them into one shipment, so clearance and delivery are paid once. The New Zealand buyer’s tips from her Taobao order are practical: skip mirrors and glass, insist on wooden crates, prefer pieces that are easy to assemble, and ask every seller for assembly drawings — in China installation is often included, abroad you will be matching a bag of screws yourself.

When clients have found furniture online, we can be the eyes on the ground. We check the company behind the shop against the name on the order, visit the showroom or workshop, and compare its quote with others against one written specification. Deposits — as low as 10% on many orders — are paid to the supplier’s company account. We send weekly production photos and video of your pieces, inspect every item against the signed-off spec before loading, and you release the balance only after approving the photo and video report. Pieces from several online sellers can be received into our Foshan consolidation warehouse and shipped together. Our fee is 3–5% of order value, on its own line.

FAQ

Can you buy furniture from China online and ship it overseas?

Yes. Many Chinese online sellers will deliver to a forwarder or consolidation warehouse in China, and some arrange export themselves. Compare the landed total, not the listing price.

Are Chinese marketplace platforms safe for buying furniture?

Safety depends more on the seller and how you pay than on the platform’s name. Marketplaces offer reviews and a dispute process, but the terms and coverage for goods leaving China vary, so read them before relying on them. For custom pieces, a written specification and an inspection before the balance matter more than the platform.

How do I know an online furniture seller in China is real?

Ask for the registered company name and address, check that the order and the bank account carry the same name, and ask for a live video call from the workshop rather than a recorded clip. Couriered material samples are a good second test.

Should I pay a Chinese furniture seller through a personal WeChat account?

Paying a personal account for a commercial order leaves you with no link between the payment and the company that owes you the goods. Ask for a bank transfer to the company account named on the order; if a seller refuses, treat it as a warning sign.
