Office furniture from China: task chairs, desks and fit-outs
Office furniture from China: what to specify for task chairs, desks and 3.6–4.8 m meeting tables, why power boxes need local sockets, and how to vet makers.
- A Foshan office-furniture seller lists one meeting-table design in 3.6, 4.2 and 4.8 m lengths, seating about ten, with pop-up charging boxes on both sides.
- A Shanghai maker advertises a 10,000 m²+ factory and a 2,000 m²+ showroom, free measuring, renderings, delivery and installation, and a ten-year warranty — claims to verify, and services that apply locally.
- A Chongqing maker claims prices 30% or more below market and a quote within 24 hours from floor area or headcount.
- Built-in power modules in Chinese tables are usually fitted with Chinese sockets; export orders should specify local-standard, certified modules.
- Task chairs are the one office item to buy against a recognised test standard, such as BIFMA in North America or EN 1335 in Europe, with a sample first.
Office furniture from China — desks, workstations, meeting tables, storage and seating — is widely made in Guangdong, Shanghai and Chongqing, and many makers will build to a floor plan. For an overseas fit-out, specify the chair standard your market uses, the power and data modules for your country’s plugs, finishes that match across suppliers, and knock-down packing. The domestic promises in Chinese listings, such as free measuring and installation, do not travel; plan those separately.
What office furniture is worth buying from China?
Desks, workstations, meeting and executive tables, storage and reception pieces give the clearest value; task chairs are worth buying too, but only against a test standard. Chinese office furniture makers cover the whole range. A Chongqing maker’s post lists desks, filing cabinets, meeting tables, staff chairs and lockers from one source; a Foshan seller’s post showcases a designer meeting table for showpiece rooms; a Shanghai maker offers everything from reception sofas to executive desks with its own design service.
The best candidates are pieces where size, finish and cable management vary by project, because Chinese factories build to order readily. Soft seating and reception furniture sit close to the home categories in our sofa-buying guide, and many small offices and studios now mix office and residential pieces — see a living room from China in one order. For larger projects, our office furniture sourcing service covers the process end to end.

How do you buy task chairs from China that meet your market’s standards?
Name the standard, ask for the test report for the exact model, and approve a sample before production. North American buyers usually ask for chairs tested to the relevant BIFMA standard; European buyers commonly refer to EN 1335 for office work chairs. Ask for the report in the factory’s own name for the model you are buying, not a component supplier’s certificate.
- Gas lift: ask for the class or rating and the supplier’s certificate.
- Base: nylon or aluminium, and the load it has been tested to.
- Mechanism: synchro, tilt lock and seat slide, with the adjustment ranges written down.
- Foam and fabric: density and rub count, as for any upholstery — see wrijfwaarden van stof.
A chair that looks like a famous design model is also an IP question, as with the designer-look pieces in our Italian minimalist guide: choose the factory’s own designs and check anything close to a known chair with a local adviser.
Chinese office furniture listings sell services that end at the city limits: free measuring, free renderings, free installation. For an overseas fit-out, the valuable service is not free installation but a correct packing list — every item coded, every carton labelled, every power module wired for your country. That is what decides whether an office opens on the planned Monday.
What should a meeting table or workstation specification include?
Size and seating, top material and edge, base and levelling, and — most often missed — the power and data modules for your country. The Foshan seller’s meeting table comes in 3.6, 4.2 and 4.8 m lengths and is marketed as seating about ten, with pop-up charging boxes let into the top. Two commenters asked what size room a 4.2 m table needs; the only reply was an invitation to message privately, so work it out from your own floor plan with circulation space around the chairs.
| Onderdeel | Wat te specificeren |
|---|---|
| Blad | Veneer, laminate or lacquer; thickness; edge; colour code |
| Basis | Steel or timber; levelling feet; knock-down joints |
| Power and data | Local socket type, USB and data ports; certified to your market |
| Kabelmanagement | Trays, spines and access flaps under the top |
| Werkplekken | Screen heights, desk depths, shared beams and add-on units |
Chinese power boxes are normally fitted with Chinese sockets and wiring. For export, specify modules built for your market’s plugs and electrical rules, or have the factory cut the openings and fit locally sourced modules on site.

Wat voegen de reacties toe?
The office threads are short, but the questions buyers ask are the right ones.
- Room size, not just table size. Two readers asked what room a 4.2 m table suits; the seller answered by private message only.
- Smaller versions for executives. Asked whether the meeting table suits a boss’s office, the seller said smaller sizes are available.
- Where is the factory? Readers of the Shanghai post repeatedly asked for the factory and showroom address; the maker named its district and moved the conversation to private messages.
How do you vet an office furniture manufacturer in China?
Treat factory size, warranty and price claims as things to verify, and confirm that the seller actually makes what it sells. The posts in our research make typical claims: a 10,000 m²+ factory with a 2,000 m²+ showroom and a ten-year warranty in Shanghai; prices 30% or more below market and stock ready to go in Chongqing; a single source for every piece. Some of those will be true; all of them can be checked with a business licence, a video walk-through of the production floor and references for export orders. Our gids voor fabrieksverificatie sets out the steps.
Note which promises are local. Free measuring, renderings, delivery and installation are domestic services for customers nearby — one maker limits free delivery and installation to its own city. An overseas buyer needs the drawings, the packing list and the installation plan written into the order instead.

How do you plan an office fit-out order from China?
Start from a furniture plan with codes for every item, lock finishes with physical samples, and pack everything knock-down and labelled by zone. A fit-out rarely comes from one factory: chairs, desks, storage and soft seating are usually made by specialists. That makes colour and finish consistency the main risk, so approve one master sample per finish and check every factory’s output against it at inspection.
- Give each item a code on the plan and on its cartons.
- Plan installation locally, or budget for technicians to travel.
- Check classification with our office furniture HS code guide en bevestig de invoerrechten met je expediteur.
Items from several makers can be received, checked and consolidated before loading; see our gids voor het consolidatiemagazijn.

Hoe Source Foshan dit aanpakt
For office projects we turn your furniture plan into coded specifications — chairs with the test standard you need, tables with local power modules, storage with finish codes — and compare two or three makers per category. We track production with weekly photos and video, check every item against the approved finish samples and plan, and consolidate chairs, desks and storage in our Foshan warehouse, labelled by zone. The balance is released only after you approve the inspection report; our 3–5% service fee is agreed in writing before any factory is contacted.
For breakout areas, reception and executive rooms that should feel more like a home than an office, we recommend Arcaya Living: its lounge chairs, storage and lighting collections are sourced to confirmed specifications, and it works with designers on projects.

FAQ
Is kantoormeubilair uit China van goede kwaliteit?
It ranges from very good to poor, often within the same city. Quality depends on the board, hardware, mechanism and finish written into the order and checked before loading, and for chairs on testing to a recognised standard.
Can Chinese office chairs meet BIFMA or EN standards?
Many can, but ask for a test report for the exact model in the factory’s name and approve a sample. Do not rely on component certificates or a generic brochure.
Do meeting tables from China come with power sockets?
Often, but fitted with Chinese sockets. Specify modules for your country’s plugs and electrical rules, or have the openings cut and fit local modules on site.
Who installs office furniture shipped from China?
Usually a local installer at the destination, working from the factory’s assembly drawings. Ask for drawings and fittings lists in English and for every carton to be coded to the floor plan.
