Buying furniture from China: the questions buyers ask on Reddit, answered
What buyers ask on Reddit about furniture from China — safety, shipping cost, 2–6 month waits, replicas, breakage — answered from first-hand accounts.
- Die Bestellung einer Käuferin aus New York brauchte fünf Monate, from ordering on 20 June to delivery on 17 November, including about six weeks at sea.
- A London family’s Foshan maker quoted up to 35 days of production; they advise ordering two months ahead, and their container was still delayed by a week.
- A US buyer puts transit at about two months if all goes well and up to six if not, and says buying unseen is unrealistic unless someone inspects in person.
- The biggest savings buyers report are on copies of famous designs — which can infringe design rights at home.
- Marble and stone are what these buyers most often report broken in transit; one buyer’s insurer paid, but no replacement came.
People weighing up furniture from China — on Reddit and in similar forums — tend to ask the same things: is it safe, how long does it take, what does shipping cost, is the quality real, are replicas legal, and what happens if something breaks. First-hand accounts from overseas buyers give consistent answers: allow two to six months, treat shipping as a large separate cost, have someone see the goods before they are crated, and insure the shipment.
Is it safe to buy furniture from China?
Safe enough if someone qualified sees the goods before the final payment; risky if you buy from photos and pay in full up front. We have not quoted Reddit threads here; the answers draw on detailed accounts by overseas buyers on Xiaohongshu. A New York buyer spent five days visiting Foshan factories and chose makers by build quality, comfort, fabric and how orderly the workshop was — admitting that springs, foam density and frame timber were beyond her, and that once a piece is upholstered nobody can open it to check. A US buyer who toured factories in three cities is blunter: without someone on site, shape may match while colour and finish do not.

How long does furniture from China take to arrive?
Two to six months door to door in the accounts we reviewed. The New York order: placed 20 June, everything in the warehouse by 29 August, sailed 25 September, reached port 6 November, delivered 17 November. The London family’s maker produced most pieces within 35 days, and they recommend ordering two months ahead after a force-majeure delay held their container for a week. The US buyer’s range — two months if smooth, up to six or a lost item if not — is the honest one to plan around. Asked whether the house sat empty meanwhile, the New York buyer says they moved in with their old furniture.

Read enough first-hand accounts and one pattern stands out: the orders that went well had someone look at the goods before they were crated — the buyer on a five-day factory tour, or a maker whose owner sent progress updates and replaced a stone slab that came out wrong. The orders people regret were bought from pictures. Price and platform matter less than that single step.
How much does shipping furniture from China cost?
It depends mainly on volume, route and destination charges, so get a quote for your cubic metres rather than trusting anyone’s single figure. The New York buyer replies simply that shipping to the US is very expensive. The London family’s sofa, a custom version of a design they had seen in a London department store, cost about 2,000 (pounds, from the context) including freight, because the maker bundled sea freight into the price. A New Zealand buyer paid NZD 2,400 for freight, clearance, some crating and taxes on nearly 8 m³.
Consolidating everything into one shipment keeps clearance and delivery charges to one set. Our Leitfaden zum Möbelversand aus China explains LCL, FCL and landed cost.

Was fügen die Kommentare hinzu?
The comment threads answer several follow-up questions readers had.
- Stein bricht. The top comment under the New York buyer’s post reports two broken marble pieces and a reply reports another beyond repair; elsewhere the author says insurance paid for her broken marble table, but nobody sends a new one.
- Freight was bundled. Asked which shipping company they used, the London family says there was none: the furniture maker included sea freight and carried the pieces into the house.
- Copies feel slightly different. A reader asks whether a famous lounge chair in the New York buyer’s photos is a Chinese copy; she says it looks nearly identical but the original’s seat is springier.
- Heavy modular units. The New York buyer warns that her modular cabinet weighs about 200 kg and suggests ordering smaller sections.
Ist die Qualität von Möbeln aus China gut?
The good makers are very good; the problem is telling them apart from a distance. The US buyer rates China’s independent design studios as equal to Western brands on materials and build, with prices to match. The London family praise their maker’s fine sanding and the absence of any chemical smell — important with a newborn in the house. The New York buyer’s favourite maker sent production updates, let her choose leg materials, and paid for a replacement stone slab when the first came out differently from the one she had seen. That kind of maker is found by visiting, by references, or by someone doing it for you.

Are replica designer furniture pieces from China legal?
It depends on your country and the design; many famous pieces are still protected, and customs can detain infringing goods. The price gap is what tempts people. The London family say their copy of a sofa listed at £43,000 in London cost them about 2,000 delivered and differs mainly in the feel of the leather; a US buyer saw a famous lounge-chair copy for about RMB 6,000. Protection for furniture designs varies widely between countries, so ask an IP lawyer before importing copies. We would steer you towards original designs, which several Foshan studios now make.
Do you need an agent, and how should you pay?
Not necessarily — but someone has to write the specification, check the goods and consolidate the shipment, and whoever it is should be paid transparently. The New York buyer visited without a guide and did not feel she needed one. The London family used a maker that included freight, delivered into the house, and helped them buy rugs and art from suppliers it trusted. Wie Source Foshan damit umgeht
The pattern in these accounts is the one we work to: someone qualified looks at your goods before they are packed. We shortlist and vet factories in Foshan and Dongguan, compare two or three quotes per line against one written specification, send weekly production photos and video, and inspect every item against the confirmed spec before loading. You approve the photo and video report before the balance is released. Pieces from different makers are consolidated, re-packed to export standard and labelled by room in our Foshan warehouse, then shipped LCL or FCL to your door. Our fee is 3–5% of order value, separate from the factory price, and we take no supplier commissions.
If a custom order feels like too many moving parts, we recommend Arcaya Living: a catalogue of 10,000+ pieces already specified, a three-minute style quiz, and delivery through to installation with the packaging removed.

FAQ
Is buying furniture from China a good idea?
For a whole room or home, often; for one or two pieces, rarely. It works best when someone checks the goods before the balance is paid and everything ships together.
Does furniture from China smell or off-gas?
It depends on the materials and finishes. One London family reported no smell at all; ask for emissions test reports relevant to your market rather than relying on assurances.
What is the cheapest way to ship furniture from China?
Consolidate everything into one shipment and pick LCL or a full container according to volume. Several small shipments each pay their own clearance and delivery charges.
Can I return furniture bought from China?
In practice, rarely. Returning a sofa across an ocean usually costs more than it is worth, which is why problems need to be caught at inspection, before the balance and before loading.
