Bedroom furniture from China: upholstered beds, storage beds and casegoods
Bedroom furniture from China: how upholstered and storage beds are built, why a 1.8 m Chinese bed may not fit a US king, and what to check before shipping.
- A Foshan bed factory’s listing specifies top-grain leather on contact surfaces only, a pine headboard frame “with no density board” and a steel-and-pine slat base — the level of detail to ask for.
- Chinese beds are sold as 1.5 m and 1.8 m wide by 2.0 m long; a US queen mattress is about 152 × 203 cm and a US king about 193 × 203 cm.
- One big-headboard design is 2.3 m long and 2.2 m wide overall for a 1.8 m mattress — the poster warns it will not suit small bedrooms.
- A poster with a bed-and-mattress factory recommends suede-effect fabric over nubuck leather, which the poster says is hard work to keep clean.
Bedroom furniture from China is strongest in upholstered beds, storage beds and matching bedside tables and dressers, most of it made around Foshan. Before ordering, fix three things in writing: the internal mattress size for your country (Chinese 1.5 m and 1.8 m beds do not match US or UK sizes exactly), what the headboard frame and slats are made of, and which surfaces are really leather. Then inspect before loading and ship headboards and bases as separate, well-protected parts.
What bedroom furniture is worth buying from China?
Upholstered beds give the clearest saving, followed by storage beds and matching casegoods; mattresses and fitted wardrobes need more care. Buyers travel to Foshan to see beds in person: one buyer’s post shows a grid of master-bedroom beds shortlisted on a Foshan trip, mostly low upholstered frames.
For an overseas buyer, the good categories are: upholstered and leather beds, oversized headboards, bedside tables, dressers and benches. Custom-fitted wardrobes are worth doing too, but they are a measurement project — see our wardrobes and closets guide. If you are furnishing more than the bedroom, our sofa-buying hub covers the living room and links to every category in this series.

How is a good upholstered bed from China built?
A solid-timber headboard frame, generous but stable padding, real leather only where it is claimed, and a slat base rated for the load. One Foshan factory’s upholstered-bed listing is a useful template because it names every layer: top-grain leather on the surfaces you touch; a down-and-fibre headboard fill; a headboard inner frame of pine battens, “no density board”; imported larch in the frame; and a carbon-steel base with pine slats, upgradeable to all-timber slats or a quiet solid platform.
- Leather on contact surfaces. This is common practice; it means the sides and back are a matching synthetic. Ask which surfaces are which.
- Headboard frame. Pine or larch battens hold staples and screws; fibreboard frames loosen over time.
- Slats. Another popular post describes a sprung “half-butterfly” slat base with individual cushioned supports that give zoned, quiet support, much like pocket springs in a mattress.
Several of these listings also describe their style as mid-century or Italian minimalist; if a bed is named after a famous designer model, read our note on copies in Italian minimalist furniture from Foshan first.

The most important dimension on a bed from China is not on the showroom tag. Chinese factories build to a 1.5 m or 1.8 m mattress; your mattress is almost certainly different, and a bed that is 3 cm too narrow is a bed that cannot be used. Write the internal size, in centimetres, into the order — and measure it at inspection with a tape, on camera.
Will a bed from China fit my mattress?
Not automatically: Chinese bed sizes are metric and do not match US, UK or Australian mattress sizes exactly, so give the factory your mattress’s actual dimensions. Foshan listings quote beds as 1.5 m or 1.8 m wide by 2.0 m long, which is the mattress they are built around, not the outside size.
| Market | Common size name | Approximate mattress size |
|---|---|---|
| China | 1.5 m / 1.8 m | 150 × 200 cm / 180 × 200 cm |
| US / Canada | Queen / King | 152 × 203 cm / 193 × 203 cm |
| UK | King / Super king | 150 × 200 cm / 180 × 200 cm |
| Australia | Queen / King | 153 × 203 cm / 183 × 203 cm |
Measure your own mattress, then check the outside size: one oversized design in the research is 2.3 m long, 2.2 m wide and 85 cm high for a 1.8 m mattress, and its seller warns it overwhelms small rooms. Any Foshan bed factory can change the internal size; the point is to write it into the order and check it at inspection.

What does the comment section add?
The bed threads show what buyers in China ask — and what annoys them.
- “Asking one by one is too much trouble.” The most-liked comment under the leading bed post (77 likes) objects to price-by-private-message; a reply agrees that such posts are an instant turn-off.
- Mattress size first. Asked how big the bed was, the poster answered with the mattress it fits — 1.8 × 2 m — not the outside size.
- Not every seller has a shop. A reader asked for an online store link; the poster said there was none, so orders went through direct messages.
Are storage beds from China a good idea?
Yes, for small homes — provided you specify the lift mechanism, the base board and the weight the struts must carry. Lift-up storage beds use gas struts to raise the slat platform; the struts are sized to the mattress weight, so tell the factory what your mattress weighs and ask for the strut rating.
Check the storage box itself: the floor panel material and thickness, whether it is sealed against dust, and whether the frame is built to be disassembled for delivery. Board materials and emissions ratings matter here as they do for wardrobes — see formaldehyde emissions standards for what to ask for by market.
What about bedside tables, dressers and other casegoods?
Order them with the bed, from the same factory or one that can match finishes, and specify the board, veneer and hardware. Many Foshan bed factories sell matching bedside tables — the same upholstered-bed listing pairs its bed with a bedside table in a sintered-stone top — but drawers, runners and veneer quality vary a lot between makers. Our explainer on solid wood, veneer and MDF helps you read a quote, and hinges and slides covers the hardware.
Colour matching across factories is the usual problem. Ask each factory for a physical finish sample or colour card, approve one master sample and have every piece checked against it before loading.

How do beds from China ship?
As separate parts — headboard, side rails, footboard, slats — in export cartons, with the upholstered pieces wrapped against moisture and pressure. Beds generally fall under Chapter 94 headings that depend on material and whether a mattress is included; see our bed and mattress HS code guide and confirm duty with your broker.
Mattresses are a separate question. Many markets have their own mattress flammability rules — for example, the US federal open-flame standard for mattresses — so only order one from China if the factory can show test evidence for your market. Beds can travel with outdoor and office items from other factories in one consolidated shipment; see outdoor furniture and office furniture from China.
How Source Foshan handles it
For beds we specify the internal mattress size in centimetres, the outside size, the headboard frame timber, the fill, which surfaces are leather, the slat or platform system and the lift mechanism for storage beds, and compare two or three quotes on that basis. We photograph headboard frames before upholstery, check dimensions and colour against the approved sample at inspection, and consolidate beds with the rest of the house in our Foshan warehouse, labelled by room. Deposits go to the supplier’s company account; the balance is released only after you approve our photo and video report.
If you would like to see finished bedrooms rather than single beds, we recommend Arcaya Living: its bed and bedroom collections are sourced to confirmed specifications, and its whole-home service can add custom wardrobes and delivery with installation.

FAQ
What size is a Chinese king bed?
Chinese beds are usually sold as 1.8 × 2.0 m (the king equivalent) or 1.5 × 2.0 m. These differ slightly from US, Canadian and Australian mattress sizes, so give the factory your mattress’s exact dimensions.
Can I buy a mattress from China?
You can, but check your market’s mattress flammability and labelling rules first and ask the factory for test evidence. Many importers buy the bed frame from China and the mattress locally.
Are Chinese upholstered beds real leather?
Often on the surfaces you touch only, with matching synthetic on the sides and back. That is common practice; ask the factory to list which surfaces are leather and which grade.
How are beds from China packed?
In separate parts — headboard, rails, slats and legs — in export cartons with corner protection, with fixings bagged and labelled.
