Outdoor furniture from China: aluminium, teak, rope and what survives the weather
Outdoor furniture manufacturers in China: aluminium, teak, rope and rattan compared, the 5 specs that decide weather resistance, and how to vet a factory.
- A Foshan outdoor maker’s listing describes welded thick-wall aluminium frames with anti-corrosion treatment and olefin rope weaving — the combination most export outdoor ranges now use.
- The same maker says it offers free detailed shop drawings and has worked on villa, hotel and resort projects; in the comments it confirms it takes small custom orders from drawings.
- It also says some models are held in stock, while others are made to order — ask which before you plan a season.
- One listing calls its sofa the “same design” as a named designer collection, a phrase that should prompt a design-rights check before import.
- A Foshan umbrella maker markets a shade that doubles as a screen and a projection surface; dozens of readers asked the price and were answered only by private message.
China’s outdoor furniture manufacturers, many of them in Foshan, are strongest in powder-coated aluminium frames with woven rope or synthetic rattan, plus teak and umbrellas. What survives the weather is decided by five specifications: the aluminium wall thickness and coating, the fixings, the rope or wicker fibre, the cushion foam and the fabric. Put all five in writing, check that the design is the factory’s own, and inspect welds and coating before loading.
What do outdoor furniture manufacturers in China make best?
Aluminium-framed seating with rope or synthetic wicker, dining sets, loungers and umbrellas — increasingly made to designers’ drawings for hotels, resorts and villas. One Foshan outdoor factory’s posts show a welding floor full of aluminium frames and describe the business as design, development and production for villa, hotel and resort projects, with free detailed drawings for customers. In its comments the factory confirms that it is in Foshan rather than Dongguan, that it works with trading companies and that it will develop small custom quantities from a buyer’s drawing.
That profile is typical: the better Chinese patio furniture manufacturers are set up for both project work and export ranges, and many sell through trading companies as well as directly. For a homeowner, outdoor pieces are a natural addition to a larger order — see our guide to buying a sofa from China and a full living room in one order. Aluminium, teak, rope or rattan: which outdoor furniture survives the weather?
Powder-coated aluminium with olefin rope or PE wicker is the most forgiving choice; teak lasts if the grade is right; steel and PVC wicker are where cheap outdoor furniture fails. The table summarises what to specify.
| Material | What to specify | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium frame | Alloy, wall thickness, full welds, pre-treatment and powder coat; stainless fixings | Thin tube that dents; coating that blisters from bare welds |
| Olefin or acrylic rope | Fibre type, UV stabilisation, tension and knotting at the frame | Sagging and fading within a season or two |
| Synthetic wicker | PE (polyethylene) rather than PVC; UV-stabilised; weave density | PVC wicker cracks and smells in heat |
| Teak | Heartwood grade, moisture content, legal-origin paperwork | Sapwood that greys unevenly and checks |
| Steel | Galvanising under the powder coat | Rust at welds and feet |
The Foshan maker’s rope sofa listing hits the right points — thick welded aluminium, anti-corrosion treatment, olefin rope — but a claim that the finish will not fade or rust through any storm or summer is marketing, not a test result. Ask what the coating has been tested to and whether a salt-spray or UV test report exists for the actual finish, especially for coastal homes.

Outdoor furniture fails at the joints and the surface, not in the silhouette, so a supplier’s portfolio of beautiful terraces tells you little. Buy the weld, the coating and the fibre; the design you can see is the easy part. And because outdoor ranges are where “same design” listings are most common, the safest outdoor sets for an importer are the ones a factory can prove it designed itself.
What should you specify for outdoor cushions and fabrics?
Quick-dry open-cell foam, solution-dyed outdoor fabric, zipped covers and drainage — or the cushions will outlast neither the frame nor the first wet season. Outdoor cushions are where Chinese quotes differ most for the same-looking set, because ordinary sofa foam and printed polyester are much cheaper than the right materials.
- Foam: reticulated quick-dry foam lets water drain through; standard polyurethane foam holds water and grows mould.
- Fabric: solution-dyed acrylic or olefin keeps its colour far longer than printed polyester; ask for the fabric’s own specification, not just a colour name.
- Construction: zipped, removable covers; mesh panels or drainage holes on the underside.
- Fire rules: for hotels and public spaces, check the destination’s upholstery flammability requirements; our fire-safety standards guide explains what to ask for.

What does the comment section add?
The outdoor threads are mostly trade enquiries, and the answers are informative.
- Small custom runs are possible. A reader asked whether the factory would develop a design from drawings in small quantities; the answer was yes.
- Foshan, not Dongguan. Asked where the factory is, the maker confirmed Foshan — worth verifying with a licence and a visit or video call.
- Trading companies welcome. The factory said it works with foreign-trade companies, which means some “factories” you meet online are intermediaries.
- Stock for some models only. Asked about stock and lead times, the maker said some styles are held in inventory — others are made to order.
How do you choose a patio furniture manufacturer in China?
Verify the factory, see its own designs, get a sample in your chosen finish and agree whether you are buying stock or made-to-order. Outdoor furniture is seasonal: a factory that holds some models in stock — as the Foshan maker above says it does — can ship before summer, while custom pieces need a longer lead time and a sample round. Follow the steps in our factory verification guide before paying any deposit.
Design rights deserve particular care in outdoor furniture, because many of the most recognisable rope and teak collections come from a small number of high-end brands. One Foshan listing describes its sofa as the “same design” as a named collection. A copy of a protected design can infringe registered design rights or trade dress in some markets and can be detained at customs, and that risk sits with the importer. We recommend the factory’s own designs, a genuinely different design or your designer’s drawings — and a check with a local IP adviser for anything close to a known piece.

How is outdoor furniture from China packed, classified and shipped?
Knock-down where possible, with frames wrapped against abrasion, cushions packed separately and every carton marked by set. Welded aluminium lounge chairs ship assembled and take up volume; tables and loungers can often be knocked down, which changes how much fits in a container. Ask the factory for carton sizes early — our guide to how much furniture fits in a container shows why.
Classification depends on the material and function: seats, tables, rattan and umbrellas can fall under different headings. Our outdoor and rattan furniture HS code guide sets out the options, and US buyers should read US tariffs on furniture from China, as additional duties change; confirm current rates with your broker. Outdoor pieces can be consolidated with office or home furniture from other Foshan factories in one shipment.

How Source Foshan handles it
For outdoor furniture we write the specification a weather-resistant piece needs — alloy and wall thickness, coating, fixings, fibre type, foam and fabric — and compare two or three Foshan makers on the same sheet, favouring their own designs. We check welds, coating and weave during production with photos and video, inspect every set before loading, and consolidate outdoor items with the rest of your order in our Foshan warehouse. The balance is released only after you approve our inspection report, and our 3–5% service fee is agreed in writing before any factory is contacted.
For the indoor side of the same project, we recommend Arcaya Living: its curated catalogue of 10,000+ pieces covers lounge chairs, sofas and rugs sourced to confirmed specifications, and its designer programme supports trade buyers.

FAQ
Is Chinese aluminium outdoor furniture good quality?
It can be excellent when the alloy, wall thickness, welding, pre-treatment and powder coat are specified and checked. Cheap sets usually cut corners on tube thickness, coating and fixings.
Which outdoor furniture lasts longest in coastal climates?
Well-coated aluminium with stainless fixings and solution-dyed fabrics generally lasts longest near the sea. Ask for salt-spray and UV test evidence for the actual finish.
Can Chinese factories make outdoor furniture to my own design?
Yes. Many Foshan outdoor makers develop designs from drawings, sometimes in small quantities, and some provide shop drawings free. Budget for a sample round and extra lead time.
Do I need to worry about copies in outdoor furniture?
Yes. Some listings advertise pieces as the same design as a known brand. Copies of protected designs can be seized at customs in some markets, so choose original designs and check anything similar with a local adviser.
