الخشب الصلب مقابل القشرة مقابل MDF: كيف تقرأ مواصفة الأثاث الصيني بصدق
Solid wood vs veneer vs MDF in Chinese furniture: what each label covers, how a “solid wood” nightstand turned out mostly MDF, and 6 checks before you pay.
- A Shanghai buyer (911 comments) was sold a “solid wood” nightstand; she found that only three sides of each drawer were solid and everything under the leather wrap was veneered MDF.
- The seller’s defence — that the drawers were solid — shows why the word must be tied to named parts.
- A Zhejiang cabinet guide (605 likes) compares four surface finishes: melamine, PET film, lacquer and real-wood veneer.
- Melamine-faced board is cost-effective, hard-wearing and quick to produce, she writes, but cannot be shaped and is hard to repair after a knock.
- Veneer over a stable board is often the better engineering choice for large panels; the problem is only when it is sold as solid.
Solid wood means every listed part is cut from timber; veneer is a thin slice of real wood glued over a board such as MDF, particleboard or plywood; MDF is a board made from wood fibres and resin. All three can be good furniture, but a Chinese quote that says “solid wood” may describe only some parts. Specify the material part by part — top, legs, frame, drawer sides and bottoms, back panels — and check the hidden faces before paying.
What is the difference between solid wood, veneer and MDF?
Solid wood is timber all the way through; veneer is real wood only on the surface; MDF is an engineered fibre board that is usually covered by veneer, paper, film or paint.
| المادة | How to recognise it | نقاط القوة | احذر من |
|---|---|---|---|
| خشب صلب | Grain continues round edges and through end grain | Can be sanded and repaired; strong joints | Movement and cracking in dry climates; weight |
| Real-wood veneer on board | Grain on the face stops at the edge; board visible in drill holes | Stable large panels, matched figure, lower cost | Chipped edges; thin veneer cannot be sanded much |
| MDF / particleboard with melamine, PET or paper | Printed or repeating grain; uniform edge banding | Cheap, flat, consistent colour | Swelling if wet; formaldehyde grade; screw holding |
| Plywood / multi-ply | Layered edge | Strong, holds screws well | Voids in cheap grades |
Chinese labels add one trap: shimu tiepi, “solid-wood veneer”, means real wood veneer on a board, not solid wood. Board-based furniture also brings emissions paperwork — see formaldehyde, CARB and E0/ENF.

How was a “solid wood” nightstand mostly MDF?
Because the seller called the whole piece by the material of its most visible part. A buyer in Shanghai (493 likes, 911 comments) asked whether a bed’s matching nightstands were solid wood and was told yes. The drawers she opened were solid, so she did not look further. At home the strong smell made her search Xiaohongshu for checks; pulling back the leather-wrapped edges she found veneered MDF under the wrap and in the drawer bottoms. Only three sides of each drawer were solid.
When she went back, the seller said only the drawers had been described as solid and accused her of splitting hairs. That exchange is the whole lesson: a spoken “solid wood” covers whatever the seller later says it covered. The only defence is a written, part-by-part specification that an inspector can check — the approach in our دليلنا لفحص الأثاث.

The Shanghai buyer’s seller was not exactly lying — the drawers were solid. That is what makes the word dangerous. For an overseas buyer, “solid wood” is not a material; it is a claim that has to be broken into parts before anyone pays for it. We would rather buy an honestly described veneered piece than a “solid” one nobody will put in writing.
Is veneer or MDF furniture from China worth buying?
Yes, when it is sold as what it is and the board and finish are specified. A Zhejiang guide to cabinetry finishes lists four common faces: melamine (the “no-paint board”), PET film, lacquer (primed, baked and polished — the most laborious) and real-wood veneer for buyers who want natural grain. Her notes on melamine are balanced: good value, wear-resistant, many patterns and short lead times, but it cannot be shaped, is hard to repair after a knock, and edge-banding quality varies.
For wide dining tops and tall wardrobe doors, veneer on a stable core can outperform solid timber, which moves with humidity — something a buyer shipping to a dry, heated home should weigh. For a solid-timber example, see our QC notes on a custom extending oak table. For stone tops, the board beneath matters just as much — see طاولات من الحجر المُلبّد والرخام.

How do you check what a piece is really made of?
Look where the maker did not expect you to look: edges, drawer bottoms, backs, undersides and drill holes.
- Follow the grain over an edge. If the pattern on the top does not continue down the edge and match the end grain, it is veneer or print.
- Open every drawer and check sides, back and bottom separately.
- Look into holes and cut-outs for hinges and cables — the core shows there.
- Lift a corner of upholstered or leather-wrapped panels, as the Shanghai buyer did.
- Check the back panel and underside; thin fibreboard backs are common.
- شمّه. A strong odour on a “solid wood” piece is a reason to ask about the board.
Write the answer to each check into the order, and ask your inspector to photograph the hidden faces. The قائمة فحص الأثاث المرجعية lists them by item type.
Other widely read posts in the same search tell the same story from different angles: one owner writes that it took an accident ten years on to reveal that her furniture was MDF, and warns that wood-grain and upholstered surfaces can hide it; another explainer notes that veneer is typically sliced to between 0.1 and 1.0 mm over a particleboard or plywood core — thin enough that heavy sanding goes straight through.

How should you write the material into a Chinese purchase order?
Component by component, with species, board type and finish. For example: top — oak veneer on 25 mm plywood; legs — solid oak; drawer sides — solid pine; drawer bottom — 9 mm plywood; back — melamine MDF. That line is honest, checkable and still affordable. Pair it with the step-by-step buying process so the spec is signed before the deposit.
كيف تتعامل Source Foshan مع ذلك
We specify material part by part before any factory quotes: species, board type and thickness, and surface finish for tops, legs, frames, drawers and backs. Two or three quotes are compared against that same line, so a cheaper price cannot hide a cheaper board. Our QC team photographs hidden faces — drawer bottoms, edges, backs, cut-outs — during production and again before loading, and the balance is released only after you approve the report.
If you would rather buy storage and bedroom furniture with the materials already confirmed, we recommend Arcaya Living: its catalogue is sourced to confirmed specifications and goes through a five-stage quality process to export packing.

الأسئلة الشائعة
Is veneer better than solid wood?
Not better or worse — different. Veneer on a stable core resists warping on large panels; solid wood can be sanded and repaired. What matters is that the description is honest.
Is MDF furniture from China safe?
It can be, if the board meets the emissions rules of your market. For the US, composite wood must meet TSCA Title VI / CARB Phase 2; confirm current requirements with your importer or testing lab.
How can you tell if furniture is solid wood?
Check whether the grain continues over edges and matches the end grain, and look inside drawers, holes and backs where the core shows.
What does “solid wood veneer” mean in China?
It means real wood veneer glued onto a board, not solid wood. Ask what the board is and how thick.
