LCL vs FCL for furniture: where the break-even sits and what each option risks

LCL vs FCL for furniture: movers ship shared containers from 2 m³, but a 20ft holds 22–26 m³. How to find the break-even and what shared loads risk.

In short

  • Moving companies on Xiaohongshu accept shared-container furniture from 2 m³ — one advertises from 1 m³.
  • The same companies describe a 20ft as holding 22–26 m³ of household furniture and a 40ft 52–55 m³.
  • One mover says shared loads wait 2–3 weeks for the container to fill before sailing; a full container leaves when you book it.
  • LCL is priced per cubic metre with a minimum; FCL is a flat price per container plus local charges.
  • LCL cargo is unpacked and re-handled at a shared warehouse at each end — the step where many damage stories begin.

LCL (a shared container) is cheaper for a few pieces because you pay only for the cubic metres you use; FCL (a full container) becomes cheaper once your packed volume approaches the usable space of a 20ft box, which movers put at 22–26 m³ of furniture. The exact break-even depends on the route and destination charges, so price both whenever your list passes about half a 20ft. FCL also means less handling, fewer hands and a container opened only at your door or warehouse.

22–26 m³movers’ household-furniture load for a 20ft container

~12 m³roughly half a 20ft’s usable load: the point to price both options

What is the difference between LCL and FCL for furniture?

With LCL your furniture shares a container with other shippers’ goods; with FCL the whole container is yours, sealed at loading and opened at the destination. LCL (less than container load) cargo is delivered to a consolidation station, packed into a container with other consignments, and unpacked at a shared warehouse in the destination port before delivery. FCL (full container load) cargo is loaded once, at your supplier or your consolidation warehouse, and travels untouched.

Moving companies on Xiaohongshu add a third term: “group shipping”. It is LCL under another name — the mover fills a container with its own retail customers’ goods — and one of them advertises it from 1 m³. The complete guide to shipping furniture from China shows where this choice sits in the whole process.

When does a full container become cheaper than a shared one?

When your LCL total — per-cubic-metre rate times volume, plus destination warehouse charges — passes the all-in price of a 20ft container on the same lane. There is no universal number, because both sides of the sum change with route and season. What you can do is calculate it for your own list:

  1. Add up the packed volume of every carton (not the product dimensions).
  2. Ask for an LCL quote per cubic metre, door-to-door, including destination unpacking and delivery.
  3. Ask for a 20ft quote on the same terms, and a 40ft high-cube if you are above about 26 m³.
  4. Compare totals, not rates.

A worked example with an advertised rate: a Guangdong forwarder advertised door-to-door UK delivery at RMB 1,230 per m³ in June 2026. At that rate, 12 m³ would cost about RMB 14,800 and 20 m³ about RMB 24,600. If a 20ft door-to-door quote on your lane came in below the second figure, FCL would win at 20 m³. Destination details change the picture too — see the UK guide for how VAT and delivery fit in, and our France LCL vs FCL example for a second lane.

Our view

Treat the LCL-or-FCL decision as a question about handling, not just price. For a single sofa, LCL is the only sensible choice; for a whole home, a full container loaded to your own plan is worth paying a little more for, because the goods are handled once in China and once at your door. The expensive mistakes we see are not freight rates but pieces crushed under other people’s cargo.

How do LCL and FCL compare for furniture?

LCL wins on small volumes and flexibility; FCL wins on handling, security and speed once the volume is there.

Shared container (LCL) Full container (FCL)
Pricing Per m³ with a minimum (movers quote from 1–2 m³) Flat per container, plus local charges
Best for A few pieces up to roughly half a 20ft From roughly half a 20ft to a whole house
Timing Waits for the container to fill; one mover says 2–3 weeks Sails on the booked vessel
Handling Unpacked and re-handled at shared warehouses at both ends Loaded once, opened at delivery
Mixed cargo Your crates may sit beside others’ goods Only your goods, loaded to your plan
Customs Delays on another shipper’s goods can hold the container Only your own paperwork matters

Is shared container furniture more likely to be damaged?

It is handled more, so it needs stronger packing — cartons that survive a courier are not enough. Every LCL consignment is moved by forklift into a consolidation station, loaded alongside other cargo, then unloaded again at a destination warehouse. Upholstery can end up under someone else’s cartons; a stone top can be stood beside machinery. Crating fragile pieces, marking “no stack” clearly and asking the forwarder how LCL cargo is secured are the basic defences.

With FCL, the loading plan is yours: heavy crates low, upholstery on top of nothing, fragile pieces braced against the walls. That control is often worth more than the freight difference for a whole-home order. The consolidation step itself is explained in how a Foshan consolidation warehouse works.

What should you ask before booking a mover’s shared container?

Ask what the per-metre price includes, who declares the goods, and how long the container will wait to fill. The mover adverts in our research promise door-to-door service, home unpacking and assembly. They also offer duty-free declaration as “personal effects” for emigrants and students. That relief generally covers used belongings of people moving country, not new furniture bought from factories, so ask how new goods will be declared and in whose name. Also ask for the minimum charge, the destination warehouse fees, whether crating is included, and whether delivery is to the kerb or into the room. Our shipping and consolidation service sets these out before booking.

How Source Foshan handles it

We receive every supplier’s goods in our Foshan consolidation warehouse, check each item against the confirmed specification, re-pack to export standard and label cartons by room. Once the final volume is known, we book LCL or FCL and coordinate export documents, customs and door-to-door delivery; loading is photographed. Freight is quoted by the carrier or forwarder at the time of booking, not by us; our 3–5% service fee is agreed in writing before any factory is contacted.

Prefer to choose from a ready catalogue?

For a few pieces rather than a container, we recommend Arcaya Living: its catalogue of more than 10,000 pieces comes with a full delivery path, from protective packing and freight to customs coordination, truck delivery and installation with packaging removed.

FAQ

Is LCL or FCL cheaper for furniture?

LCL is cheaper for small volumes because you pay per cubic metre. FCL usually becomes cheaper somewhere between half and a full 20ft container’s usable load — about 12–26 m³ of furniture — depending on the route. Compare door-to-door totals, not rates.

What is the minimum volume for shipping furniture LCL?

Moving companies on Xiaohongshu advertise shared furniture shipments from 2 m³, and one from 1 m³. Forwarders usually charge a minimum of one cubic metre even for less.

Does LCL take longer than FCL?

Often, yes. One mover says shared containers wait two to three weeks to fill before sailing, and LCL cargo also needs unpacking at a destination warehouse. A full container sails on the booked vessel.

Is furniture safer in a full container?

Generally, because it is handled only at loading and delivery and is loaded to your own plan. In LCL, cargo is re-handled at shared warehouses and stowed beside other goods, so fragile pieces need crating.

Can a mover's group shipment clear new furniture duty-free?

Personal-effects reliefs generally cover used belongings of people moving country, not new furniture. Ask how new goods will be declared and confirm with a customs broker.
