How to Pay in China as a Foreigner in 2026: Alipay, WeChat Pay, TenPayGo, Cards and Cash
A practical 2026 payment guide for foreign visitors to China, covering Alipay, WeChat Pay, TenPayGo, Nihao China, cards, cash, e-CNY, current fees and failed-payment fixes.
China travel · Visitor payments
For most short-term visitors, the most reliable setup is one mainstream QR wallet, one independent backup and a small amount of RMB cash. Link an eligible international card to Alipay and Weixin Pay (the service commonly called WeChat Pay outside China) before departure. Keep a physical card for hotels and larger merchants, plus cash for a dead phone, failed verification or a merchant-specific QR problem.
- Primary: Alipay or Weixin Pay with an eligible overseas card.
- Second digital route: the other mainstream wallet, TenPayGo or UnionPay’s Nihao China, if your account and card are eligible.
- Offline backup: a physical international card and modest RMB cash in useful denominations.

A Chinese bank account is not required for ordinary visitor purchases through supported international-card routes. It may still be required for functions intended for domestic users, such as wallet balance top-ups, person-to-person transfers or receiving money. For a large furniture order or supplier deposit, use the contract, invoice and traceable business-payment process explained in our China furniture payment terms guide; a consumer QR wallet is not a substitute for commercial payment controls.
No single payment method covers every merchant, card issuer and transaction type. The practical difference is whether a route is designed for everyday merchant purchases, direct card acceptance, transport, cash backup or domestic financial functions.
| Method | Best use | What you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alipay | Everyday QR purchases, transport and in-app visitor services | Phone number, identity checks when prompted and an eligible international card | International-card use is for merchant consumption; some domestic wallet functions are unavailable |
| Weixin Pay / WeChat Pay | Everyday merchant QR payments inside WeChat | WeChat account, identity information and an eligible international card | Foreign-card users can encounter service fees, issuer checks and restrictions on transfers or wallet balance |
| TenPayGo | A separate Tencent visitor app for purchases at participating Weixin Pay merchants | Supported app-store access, app registration, identity checks and an eligible funding method | It is a purchase route, not a full WeChat wallet; eligibility, funding options and limits vary |
| Nihao China | UnionPay visitor wallet, QR payments, selected online services and public transport | Email or phone registration, then Tour Wallet setup and a supported card or Tour Balance | Merchant, card and feature availability still depends on the current app and account |
| Direct bank card | Hotels, deposits, airports, major attractions and larger retailers displaying your card network | Physical card, PIN where applicable and issuer approval for China transactions | International card acceptance is not universal at small merchants |
| RMB cash | Phone, network or account failure; small purchases and transport backup | RMB notes or coins, preferably including small denominations | Self-service and fully online transactions may require another route |
| e-CNY | An additional official digital-yuan wallet | e-CNY app, an overseas phone number and an eligible operator wallet | Setup and merchant use add another system to learn; most short trips do not require it |

Complete the parts that depend on your home phone number, bank and passport while you still have easy access to them. Binding a card does not guarantee that every later payment will pass the wallet’s checks, the card network’s checks and your bank’s fraud controls.
- Bring the passport used for travel. Enter your legal name in the same order and spelling shown in the passport. Keep the document available for identity review.
- Keep your home number alive. Enable roaming or another method that can receive SMS and bank verification messages. Do not assume a data-only eSIM can receive your issuer’s OTP.
- Install from official app-store listings. App availability and features can differ by store region. Update each app before departure.
- Link at least two eligible cards if possible. A second card should ideally come from a different issuer or network, so one issuer decline does not remove every digital route.
- Tell your card issuer about travel if it still uses travel notices. Confirm online, contactless, international and foreign-currency transactions are enabled. Ask about foreign-exchange and cash-withdrawal fees.
- Set up two payment routes. For example, Alipay plus Weixin Pay, or one of those plus TenPayGo or Nihao China.
- Know your support channels. Save the wallet support page, your bank’s international phone number and the last four digits of each card. Never share an OTP or full card number with a merchant.
- Carry cash and the physical cards. Do not rely on screenshots of payment codes; live codes change and may require the app, network and device security to work.

Alipay with an international card
Alipay is a strong first wallet for a visitor because it combines merchant QR payments with transport and other travel services. Register with the phone-number route offered to your region, follow any identity prompts and add an overseas card supported on the binding page. At checkout, you either scan the merchant’s QR code or show your changing payment code for the merchant to scan.
Alipay’s official visitor information says major international cards can be linked for daily purchases in mainland China. A linked international card does not unlock every domestic feature: personal transfers, red packets, wealth-management products, insurance and other financial services are outside this visitor card-payment route. The exact supported card organizations, fee and limit should be taken from the app screen and the applicable agreement at the time of payment.
Alipay+ also allows users of certain overseas partner wallets to pay at participating mainland merchants. That is a separate route from downloading Alipay and linking a bank card. Check whether your home wallet is listed and whether the merchant displays the relevant acceptance mark before treating it as your plan.

Weixin Pay / WeChat Pay with an international card
Weixin Pay is the practical second mainstream wallet because many merchants already accept its QR network. In WeChat, open the Services or Wallet area available to your account, add an eligible card, complete the requested identity checks and test a small merchant purchase after arrival.
The published international-card pricing reviewed on 30 September 2026 states that a single transaction of RMB 200 or less has no international-card service fee, while a transaction above RMB 200 is charged 3%. When an eligible purchase is refunded, the corresponding service fee is refunded in proportion to the refunded amount. Your card issuer can still add its own foreign-exchange or cross-border fee.
Tencent also publicized a 2026 new-user offer under which eligible first-time international-card users can receive a waiver of the 3% fee on eligible daily spending, up to RMB 1,000 per day, during the first 90 consecutive days after binding. Treat that as an account-specific promotion: rely on it only if the offer appears in your app with current terms.
An account funded only by an overseas card generally supports merchant consumption. It does not automatically provide a domestic wallet balance, top-ups, person-to-person transfers, money collection or red packets. These boundaries explain why a merchant’s personal collection code or a request to “transfer” can fail even after an ordinary shop payment worked.

TenPayGo
TenPayGo is a separate Tencent app for international visitors, built on the Weixin Pay merchant network. Tencent’s app listing describes payment at merchants that accept Weixin Pay across common visitor scenarios. The onboarding material reviewed for this guide shows a separate app and an email-led registration flow, followed by adding an eligible overseas payment method. That is useful for someone who wants a payment-focused route outside the main WeChat interface.
TenPayGo should be treated as an additional visitor option rather than a guarantee that every Weixin Pay transaction will work. Merchant type, QR-code type, country, card, wallet, identity status and risk checks can affect a payment. Its published service agreement does not state that a WeChat account is a prerequisite, but email registration does not remove identity-verification or compliance checks.
TenPayGo is designed for purchases. Do not assume it can send or receive personal transfers, issue red packets, top up a general wallet balance or reproduce every service inside WeChat. Check the current in-app list of supported countries, payment methods, fees and limits. If it is not available in your app-store region, choose another official route instead of sideloading it.

UnionPay’s Nihao China app
Nihao China is UnionPay International’s visitor app, combining a Tour Wallet with payments, selected online services and transport functions. UnionPay’s official setup guide allows registration by email or mobile number. Users then enable the Tour Wallet and can set up Tour Balance or bind an eligible bank card as directed in the app.
UnionPay says the in-store service integrates UnionPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay acceptance networks. That broad integration is useful, but it should not be read as a promise that every personal QR code, mini program, merchant category or terminal is compatible. Supported overseas UnionPay, Visa and Mastercard funding routes, top-up methods and current fees depend on the live app and its terms.
Nihao China can be attractive if its transport or one-app visitor functions match your itinerary. It is still sensible to keep a second wallet and cash, especially during a new app’s rollout or when a specific merchant uses an unusual collection route.

Paying a merchant directly by card
Use a physical card where the merchant displays your card network, but confirm acceptance before a hotel stay, large purchase or deposit. China’s official visitor guidance says bank cards are accepted according to the card-organization marks shown at the checkout. It also directs key tourist venues and higher-category hotels to improve domestic and overseas card acceptance.
Acceptance remains uneven in smaller restaurants, market stalls and independent shops, where QR payment is often the normal workflow. Some hotels accept Apple Pay or PayPal, but the government guide explicitly tells visitors to ask the hotel in advance; neither should be treated as a general retail payment method across China.
For hotel deposits or car rental, bring the physical card in the traveller’s name. A wallet token or virtual card may be fine for the room charge yet unsuitable for a pre-authorisation, deposit release or identity check.

Paying with RMB cash
RMB cash remains legal tender and is a real backup, even in a QR-first economy. Rules effective from 1 February 2026 say businesses and public-service fee collectors generally must respect the public’s choice of lawful payment method and must accept cash for face-to-face or staffed transactions. The rules provide different handling for fully online services and require self-service operators to explain payment methods and provide a practical cash-conversion route for exceptional cases.
Carry useful notes rather than expecting every small vendor to change a very large denomination. Foreign cards can withdraw RMB at ATMs displaying the matching card-network logo, subject to the ATM and issuer. China’s official guide says each traveller may carry up to RMB 20,000 in cash into or out of the country on each trip.

Using the e-CNY app
The e-CNY app is an official additional wallet, not a requirement for an ordinary visit. The People’s Bank of China visitor guide says an e-CNY account can be registered with mobile numbers from more than 210 countries and regions. In the app, select an authorized operator that supports international service, then follow the current prompts for the wallet level and overseas-card route available to you.
e-CNY may suit travellers who want another state-backed digital option or who encounter a use case that specifically supports it. Alipay and Weixin Pay are usually easier starting points because visitors will encounter their merchant interfaces more often. Keep the e-CNY app as one part of a layered setup, not your only route.

A successful card binding proves that the card can be stored; it does not turn a visitor account into a domestic Chinese wallet or bank account. Depending on the app, identity status and funding source, expect some of these restrictions:
- Sending money to an individual as a personal transfer.
- Receiving money or collecting payments into a wallet balance.
- Sending red packets or using social-payment functions.
- Adding money to a general wallet balance from an overseas card.
- Paying a personal collection QR code when only merchant consumption is supported.
- Using every mini program, subscription, financial product or merchant category.
- Assuming that a linked card will pass every issuer, 3-D Secure, wallet-risk or merchant check.
- Paying a large commercial deposit safely without a contract, invoice, named beneficiary and payment evidence.
If you are sourcing furniture, this boundary matters. A salesperson may make a personal QR code look convenient, but it can weaken the paper trail and may exceed a visitor wallet’s permitted use. Our furniture sourcing process explains how supplier comparison, documentation and payment controls fit together.
Read the payment confirmation screen before approving a purchase. A total cost can contain three separate layers: the app’s service fee, the card network or issuer’s exchange rate, and an issuer cross-border fee. A platform promotion may remove one layer without changing the others.
| Route | Verified position | What to check live |
|---|---|---|
| Weixin Pay with an international card | RMB 200 or less per transaction: no international-card service fee. Above RMB 200: 3%. Corresponding fee is refunded proportionally when an eligible purchase is refunded. | Whether a new-user waiver appears; issuer FX and cross-border fees; account and merchant eligibility |
| Alipay with an international card | The binding agreement permits transaction service fees and says the current standard will be shown in a fee notice or service page. We do not treat an older percentage as a universal 2026 rate. | Fee shown before payment, supported card network, issuer exchange rate and account limit |
| TenPayGo | No single fee or limit is stated here because current terms can vary by funding route, account, region and promotion. | In-app fee, card or wallet eligibility, per-transaction and cumulative limits |
| Nihao China | Tour Wallet supports the funding methods shown to an eligible account; current pricing and limits should come from the live app. | Tour Balance top-up terms, card-binding terms, merchant coverage and promotion expiry |
| Mobile-payment platform ceiling | China’s official overseas-visitor guide says the platform ceiling was raised to US$5,000 for one transaction and US$50,000 cumulatively per year. | A wallet, issuer, merchant or risk system can apply a lower limit; do not plan a commercial payment around the ceiling |
| Direct card | No wallet fee. Merchant conversion, card-network conversion and issuer foreign-transaction terms may affect cost. | Card acceptance, transaction currency, issuer fee, deposit or pre-authorisation terms |
| Cash and ATM | No wallet fee. Exchange, ATM operator and issuer withdrawal fees may apply. RMB cash carried across the border is limited to RMB 20,000 per person per trip. | ATM logo, withdrawal cap, operator disclosure and issuer charge |
Limits are not promises of approval. Identity status, transaction history, merchant category and anti-fraud checks can all produce a lower operational limit. If a planned purchase is close to any limit, arrange a documented bank route before travelling.
Do not keep tapping “pay” when the status is unclear. First identify whether the failure occurred at account verification, card authorization, the wallet, the merchant QR code or final settlement.

The passport review is pending or rejected
Check that the name, document number, nationality and expiry date match the passport exactly. Retake the information-page image in good light, without glare or cropped edges. Use the app’s support route if the status remains pending; repeatedly creating accounts can make identity matching harder.
The card binds successfully but the purchase is declined
Confirm that the card supports online, international and foreign-currency transactions. Make sure you can receive the issuer’s SMS or app challenge. Ask the bank whether it blocked the merchant or wallet authorization. Then try a small purchase, a second issuer or another wallet instead of repeatedly submitting the same charge.
The merchant’s QR code does not work
Ask whether the code is a business merchant code or a personal collection code. Try the opposite workflow: scan the merchant’s code, or ask the merchant to scan your live payment code. If the visitor card route still does not support that code, use your second wallet or cash.
Your bank shows a charge but the merchant says it was not paid
Stop before retrying. Compare the wallet’s transaction status with the merchant’s receipt screen and the bank’s status; a pending authorization is not the same as a completed settlement. Save the transaction ID, amount, time, merchant name and screenshots, then open a case with the wallet and issuer. Ask the merchant for a separate receipt if you pay again by another method.
A refund has not appeared on the card
Check whether the wallet marks the original transaction as refunded and whether the card entry is still pending. Keep the refund reference and contact the issuer if it has not posted within the issuer’s stated window. For Weixin Pay’s published international-card fee, the corresponding service fee follows the eligible refund proportion.
The fee is higher than expected
Separate the wallet service fee from the exchange rate and issuer charge. Check the amount and currency on the confirmation page before approving it. A social-media post about a fee waiver may refer to a different date, country, card or new-user promotion.
Transport or ride-hailing will not activate
Some transport codes require separate identity verification and city activation. Direct foreign-card entry works only on specific systems. Keep the passport, some small cash and another booking route available; the official government guide confirms that rail ticket offices can accept RMB cash, cards and mobile payments, subject to the channel and station.
The phone has no data, power or app access
Switch to the physical card or cash backup. A screenshot of a payment QR code is not a dependable substitute for the live app. Keep a power bank and a working connectivity plan if the phone will also hold transport tickets and hotel details.
Source Foshan reviewed 256 search-list appearances representing 173 unique Xiaohongshu notes on foreign visitors paying in China. The strongest demand signals were practical setup guides, card compatibility, passport verification, fees above RMB 200, app-store access and “charged but merchant not paid” reports. One selected travel-payment help post had 716 comments at the time of collection.
These are user-interest and user-experience signals, not evidence of platform rules or failure rates. The broad sample came from search-list results. We separately conducted a manual public review of the detail pages and comments on three high-engagement guides: a WeChat Pay guide (685 likes, 789 saves and 24 comments), a TenPayGo discussion (485 likes, 615 saves and 80 comments), and an Alipay setup guide (1,258 likes, 1,276 saves and 71 comments). Every operational claim in this article was checked against government, wallet-provider or card-network sources. The research snapshot was taken on 30 September 2026.

What is the easiest way for a tourist to pay in China?
For most tourists, the easiest setup is Alipay or Weixin Pay linked to an eligible international card. Add a second wallet, physical card and modest RMB cash so that a single verification, issuer or QR-code problem does not stop the trip.
Do I need a Chinese bank account to use Alipay or WeChat Pay?
No Chinese bank account is required for supported everyday merchant purchases with an eligible international card. Domestic functions such as wallet balance, transfers, receiving money and red packets can remain unavailable.
Can I set up Alipay and WeChat Pay before arriving in China?
Yes. Install the official apps, register, add the card and complete any requested identity steps before departure. A final risk check may still occur at payment, so test a small transaction after arrival and keep another route ready.
Is Alipay or WeChat Pay better for foreigners?
Both are useful. Alipay is often a straightforward first choice for visitor services and transport, while Weixin Pay is valuable because many merchants use its QR network. Set up both if your phone, identity and cards are eligible.
Does TenPayGo replace WeChat Pay?
No. TenPayGo is a separate Tencent visitor app that uses the Weixin Pay merchant network for supported purchases. It does not reproduce every WeChat service and should be kept as one option within a broader payment setup.
What is the Nihao China app?
Nihao China is UnionPay International’s visitor app. It offers a Tour Wallet, supported card or Tour Balance funding, QR payments, selected online services, translation and transport functions. Exact eligibility and fees must be checked in the app.
How much does WeChat Pay charge for an international card?
As verified on 30 September 2026, the published rate is no international-card service fee for a single transaction of RMB 200 or less and 3% above RMB 200. An eligible new-user promotion may waive the fee under separate limits shown in the app.
Can shops in China refuse cash?
For ordinary staffed and face-to-face transactions, businesses generally must accept RMB cash under rules effective from 1 February 2026. Fully online services and self-service situations are handled differently, so cash cannot complete every digital-only purchase.
Will my Visa, Mastercard or Wise card work?
Many eligible Visa and Mastercard debit or credit cards can be linked, but approval depends on the wallet, issuer, card product and risk check. Wise is a card issuer route, not a guarantee of acceptance or the lowest total cost. Bring a second issuer if possible.
Can I use Apple Pay or PayPal in China?
Some hotels and selected merchants may accept them, and certain visitor apps may offer compatible funding routes. Neither is a universal everyday payment plan. Ask the hotel or merchant in advance and keep a QR wallet, card and cash backup.
Can foreigners pay street vendors and small restaurants?
Often yes through a supported merchant QR code, but a personal collection code may reject an international-card-funded wallet. Try the merchant-scan workflow, another wallet or RMB cash if the first route fails.
What should I do if my card is charged but the merchant receives nothing?
Do not immediately retry. Record the wallet status, bank status, transaction ID, time, amount and merchant details. Ask the merchant to confirm its receipt screen, then contact the wallet and issuer. If you repay another way, get a separate receipt.
Can I use a visitor wallet for a furniture deposit?
A large supplier deposit should follow a signed order, invoice, named beneficiary, milestone and refund or rework terms. Use a traceable business-payment route agreed with the contracting entity. See our furniture deposit and balance terms guide.
Should a tourist use e-CNY?
e-CNY is a valid additional option and supports registration with many overseas phone numbers. It is usually optional for a short visit. Start with the wallet routes most merchants already use, then add e-CNY if it suits your itinerary.
Use visitor wallets for travel expenses and a documented commercial route for orders. Taxis, meals, hotels and small retail purchases fit the methods in this guide. Samples, supplier deposits and balances need contracts, invoices, correct beneficiary details and inspection-linked milestones.
