In short

  • A Sichuan homeowner had a custom vanity with seamless sintered-stone top and ceramic basin made to her own drawing for RMB 2,400, excluding the light and tap.
  • Her sizing lesson: sellers cut the top 1–2 cm short of the recess, but with level walls 5 mm is enough — her own wide side gaps ended up filled with coloured silicone.
  • A Shanxi buyer who toured major brand showrooms found drawer fronts of 25–30 cm hiding drawer sides only 7–8 cm high, and one-piece ceramic basins capped at 50–53 cm wide.
  • A Shandong buyer’s checklist ranks moisture resistance plywood > particleboard > MDF and asks for carcasses of at least 12 mm and backs of at least 9 mm.
  • US imports of wooden vanities from China fall under anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders in force since 2020 — confirm with your broker.

A good bathroom vanity from China has a plywood (not particleboard or MDF) carcass of stated thickness, a one-piece ceramic or stone top and basin, soft-close drawers designed around the waste pipe, and 304 stainless or branded hinges. Size the top to the measured recess, keep plumbing on the side without drawers, and for US imports check anti-dumping and countervailing duty exposure with your broker.

What should a vanity cabinet from China be made of?

A plywood carcass and doors with a stated thickness, edges sealed all round, and a back panel that is not an afterthought. A Shandong buyer who got her vanity wrong ranks boards for moisture resistance as plywood, then particleboard, then MDF, and warns that sellers describe boards vaguely while thinning them. Her minimums: carcass at least 12 mm, backs at least 9 mm, E0 or ENF grade. She forgot to confirm thickness and got thin boards throughout.

Some buyers skip wood altogether for 18 mm aluminium carcasses. For board choices, see cabinet board materials; for why ENF or E0 is not the same as a US CARB/TSCA certificate, see our formaldehyde guide. The wider process for custom cabinetry is in our hub guide to kitchen cabinets from China.

Which top and basin should you choose?

A one-piece top and basin is easiest to keep clean; ceramic is cheapest but limits basin width, and stone or solid-surface costs more. The Shanxi buyer found one-piece ceramic basins on brand vanities stopped at 50 cm wide, 53 cm at most — narrow enough that she hit the tap when washing her hair. Solid-surface or sintered-stone tops can be wider and deeper but cost one to two times more. For ceramic, the Shandong buyer adds, ask whether the basin is fired as one piece.

Top and basin Strength Watch for
One-piece ceramic Best value, seamless Fixed widths around 50–53 cm; glaze quality
Sintered stone or solid surface, one-piece Custom widths, depth and colour Price; joint and bonding quality
Stone top with separate undermount basin Flexible basin choice Seal around the cut-out

Stone tops need their own crate.

Our view

The vanity is where Chinese domestic habits and overseas rules collide most: a seller in Guangdong will happily fit a tap, a mirror light and a basin waste that no inspector abroad has approved. Buy the box and the stone from China; treat anything that carries water or electricity as a local-approval question first.

Why are vanity drawers so shallow, and how do you specify better ones?

Because the drawer box is cut short to clear the waste pipe; ask for the drawer-side height and a U-shaped drawer around the trap instead. After three days in the big home-furnishing malls, the Shanxi buyer found drawer fronts of 25–30 cm hiding drawer sides of only 7–8 cm — far more cut away than the basin and trap need, she says. A commenter reports 4–6 cm drawer sides even at top brands; another says a RMB 6,700 custom vanity still left the interior to the factory.

A custom order can do better, but only if the drawing says so. The Sichuan owner’s advice is to plan the vanity during the plumbing stage and put the supply, waste and sockets on the side without drawers; her plumbing ended up in the middle and cost her drawer width. Send the drawing to your plumber before anything is cut.

What does the comment section add?

The comments under the brand-vanity post turned into a debate on price, practicality and copying.

  • Brands versus function. The most-liked comment (179 likes) says brands compete on colours and styles while ignoring everyday storage; others agree that practical, Japanese-style internal layouts are hard to find.
  • Cheap can last. One commenter bought a complete vanity online for RMB 400 and has used it for six years, including a house move.
  • Photos get copied. Under the Sichuan post, a reader noticed many online sellers reusing the owner’s vanity photos — a reminder that a listing photo proves nothing about the seller.

How do you size a vanity and mirror cabinet for a recess?

Measure the recess at the back and front and at two heights, check the walls with a level, and cut the top 5 mm short if they are true. Sellers usually cut the top 1–2 cm narrower than the recess; the Sichuan owner argues that with level walls 5 mm is enough, and that trimming a slightly long top beats living with wide gaps. Hers had side gaps too wide to grout, sealed in the end with matching silicone.

Two more of her details: allow for the space hinges take inside a mirror cabinet, and check that the widest mirror door clears the door frame. She also aligned the mirror cabinet’s top with the bathroom door — worth coordinating if doors come from the same factory; see interior doors and wall panels from China. The full site routine is in measuring for cabinets from China.

What changes when you import vanities from China?

Duty, plumbing certification and electrics — none of which a domestic Chinese listing addresses. In the US, wooden cabinets and vanities from China have been subject to anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders since 2020. Whether a particular vanity is in scope — including one with a non-wood carcass — is a question for a licensed customs broker, before you order; see anti-dumping duties on cabinets and vanities.

In many markets taps, wastes and sometimes basins need local plumbing approval, and lit mirror cabinets must meet electrical rules. Buy those locally or confirm certification with your plumber and electrician, and have the factory drill for them. Agree the warranty in writing, with hardware covered separately, as the Shandong buyer advises.

Should vanities be ordered with the rest of the house?

Usually yes: the same factory can match the vanity to wardrobes, doors and panelling, and they share a container. Vanity specialists may know wet-area details better, so we compare both. See whole-house customisation in China for how one design system is run across rooms.

How Source Foshan handles it

For vanities we write the carcass board and thickness, back panel, edge sealing, top and basin, drawer-side heights and hinge specification into one drawing, check it against your plumber’s rough-in positions, and compare two or three Foshan quotes. Stone tops are crated separately; every vanity is inspected against the drawing before loading, with photos and video, and the balance is released only after you approve the report. Our fee is 3–5% of order value, agreed in writing. Duty scope goes to your customs broker, and taps and electrics to your local trades.

Prefer to choose from a ready catalogue?

If the bathroom is one room in a larger fit-out, we recommend Arcaya Living: its whole-home service covers design direction, custom cabinetry, delivery and installation, and its style quiz helps settle finishes before anything is drawn.

FAQ

Are bathroom vanities from China good quality?

They can be, if board, thickness, top and hardware are specified and checked; many domestic vanities use thin boards and shallow drawers.

What is the best material for a bathroom vanity cabinet?

Plywood is generally the most moisture-resistant board for a vanity carcass, ahead of particleboard and MDF. Some buyers choose aluminium carcasses for wet bathrooms.

Do wooden vanities from China have import duties in the US?

Wooden cabinets and vanities from China have been subject to US anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders since 2020. Rates vary by exporter and scope questions are technical, so ask a licensed customs broker before ordering.

How much smaller should a vanity top be than the recess?

One owner argues 5 mm is enough when the walls are level, rather than the 1–2 cm many sellers allow. Check the walls with a level first; out-of-square walls need more clearance or on-site scribing.
